Das Werk des polnischen Malers Wilhelm Sasnal (*1972 in Tarnów) nimmt sich der Bedeutung von Bildern unserer Wirklichkeit auf neue, ungewohnte Art an. Seine Malerei stellt neben die Faszination für die allgemeine Verfügbarkeit von Bildern ein Unbehagen. Sie zeigt einen individuellen Zugriff auf Malerei, Film und Medien, der sich nicht in einer persönlichen Mythologie erschöpft. Eigene Existenzängste, die wieder aufgenommene Diskussion um die Haltung Polens während des Holocaust und andere gesellschaftliche Geschehnisse werden in direkter und indirekter Weise in den Bildern angesprochen. Die Monografie reproduziert erstmals umfassend Sasnals malerisches Werk und stellt es in den weiteren Kontext seiner Kunst- und Musikrezeption. So verarbeitet der Künstler Vorbilder sowjetischer Fotografie, etwa Rodtschenko, bezieht sich anderswo auf ein polnisches Kinderbuch, verfremdet in einer Werkgruppe Art Spiegelmans Comic MAUS oder arbeitet nach Konzertfotografien von Musikgruppen wie Sonic Youth oder den Einstürzenden Neubauten.
