St Laurent is believed to have Pinot Noir as one of its genetic parents, a belief to which this wine is testament. Attractive berry fruit character is in abundance in this 100% St Laurent Wine, alongside a forward acidity and soft, silky tannins. It’s light to medium bodied with some extra weight adorned by the 12 months in large oak barrels. Two years in bottle have resulted in some delicious, balsamic tinged fruit notes. There is a metallic hint to the minerality here too, almost iron-like in quality.

Picking up on this metallic note and developing, earthy fruit character, a great pairing for this wine would be chicken liver parfait, or even chicken livers with porcini mushroom. Game more broadly would pair well, duck or venison – delicious.

Austrian red wines can offer amazing value, they have been perfecting their craft as long as any of their European cousins but given their relatively moderate standing on the world stage (certainly not due to their lower winemaking standards) the wines command significantly lower prices – great for us wine-drinkers! No one has been perfecting their craft more than fourth generation Familie Reinisch winery who are true ambassadors of Austrian wines - white, red and sweet alike. Seek out their single vineyard reds for some serious juice!
