Reaching up to 4 metres tall, it thrives in well-drained calcareous soils and performs well even in coastal or exposed sites. Its foliage is variable depending on climate: in milder areas or sheltered spots it retains most of its leaves through winter, acting as semi-evergreen, while in colder regions or harsh winters it may shed all or most of its leaves like a deciduous shrub. Any leaves that do persist often turn bronze before fresh green growth emerges in spring.
