Initially outnumbered and undertrained, the Portuguese forces underwent a dramatic transformation under the leadership of British General William Beresford, adopting British drill and tactics to become a formidable fighting force.
Fighting alongside British troops in mixed divisions, the Portuguese played a key role in the Peninsular War, pushing Napoleon’s forces back across the Pyrenees under Wellington’s command. Clad in their distinctive blue coats, Portuguese line infantry fought with increasing confidence and skill, earning Wellington’s praise as his "fighting cocks" while earning the nickname "pork and beans" from their British allies.
