Rare, collectible and highly sought after skirt from Maison Martin Margiela, Spring 1994 does 1989. Margiela is an absolutely legendary designer - staging the first retrospective collection by a designer in fashion history in Spring/Summer 1994, just a few short years after his introductory collection in Spring/Summer 1989. The original pieces had blank white tags, and those he revisited in the 1994 retrospective collection and designated original collection year printed on these white labels. It is our understanding that the concept of this skirt made its first appearance in 1989, in his retrospective collection in 1994, again in Fall 1996 - all the iterations of this skirt made after this time period are not made of deconstructed/repurposed denim but instead just embody the design. Margiela was/is known for not only his deconstruction based designs, but also his as-found and repurposed/upcycled designs from vintage pieces. This holy grail skirt is made from an actual pair of vintage denim pants/jeans, reworked and repurposed into a skirt - each skirt like this that exists is completely one of a kind and has its own unique characteristics. This one is great - with all the wear and tear we love about vintage denim. Intended low waist consistent with 90s style. Intentional distressing at bottom hem. Pockets at hips and rear. Zip fly with button closure. An amazing skirt from an icon's legacy.
