Cookbook by New York City businesswoman, restaurateur, and coffee wholesaler, Alice Foote MacDougall (1867–1945). Becoming an entrepreneur after the death of her husband in 1907 and wary of the acceptance of women in that role, Foote entered the coffee business using the gender neutral name A.F. MacDougall. Success selling coffee wholesale led to the establishment of several Manhattan coffee houses such as “The Little Coffee Shop” in Grand Central Station and “Sevillia” on West 57th Street.

Alice Foote MacDougall opened her own coffee roasting business in 1907 after the bankruptcy and death of her husband. In the late 1920s, she signed a long term one million dollar lease for her fifth coffee house; by the early 1930s, she owned and operated nine restaurants in Manhattan. In the present work, MacDougall shares her recipes and tips for hosting guests, developed over years of business management.
