About the Workshop:

This in-person class at Center for Book Arts is taught by instructor Hadley Vogel.

Boxmaking is an essential skill for any bookbinder. The clamshell box is a terrific way to protect and preserve a first edition, an antiquarian book, an artist's book or a suite of prints. It keeps out light, dust and prevents the wear and tear on the shelf. This class will focus on the basic techniques - accurate measuring, cutting, and gluing. The critical aspect of making a clamshell box is precision in measuring. The 1st tray needs to hold a book or sheets without rubbing but without room for movement. The 2nd tray needs to fit the first. And the cover needs to pull it all together so it opens and closes properly and stands up straight.

Required Materials:

  • A book that you would like to make a box for
  • Bone folder
  • Olfa snap-off knife with replacement blades

All other materials will be provided by Center for Book Arts at no additional cost.

About Hadley Vogel

Hadley Vogel Hadley Vogel (b. 1987) is a second generation bookbinder who apprenticed from an early age under her father Paul Vogel of the Vogel Bindery in East Hampton, NY. In addition to her apprenticeship on Long Island, Hadley worked under master binder Martín Farfán Patiño, of Farfán Encuadernadores, Mexico City, MX, where she honed her skills, focusing on restorations of historic volumes from Mexican museum and institutional collections. Since the opening of Hadley Hill Bindery, she has focused on the development of experimental forms, including plush bindings and the use of recycled fur, melding contemporary aesthetics with traditional construction processes.

Great little screen.

Great divider. Provides just enough privacy from my colleague in the office across from me (and vice versa). Easy to set up and sturdy. Worth the price IMO.

Perfect Divider Wall!
Color: Iron, Color: Iron
This Divider Wall is perfect for creating a private and organized space! The sleek black design blends seamlessly into my room, and the build quality is excellent. It’s lightweight yet sturdy, standing firmly on the floor without wobbling. I use it to separate my desk area from my bed, and it makes the room feel more functional and professional. Highly recommended for anyone looking to divide their space efficiently while maintaining a modern aesthetic!

Great for separation and stands on its on without issues.
Color: Midnight
Nice panel! But ... if you plan to use as a bulletin board, not great. We are going to place styrofoam in between to see if can get things to stay in place. We homeschool and it keeps our grands from distracting each other.

Provides privacy without being stanoffish
Color: Steel, Color: Steel
Its a perfect way to get a lil bit of privacy, its the color steel. Its a little darker than the picture but it works. Free standing doesn't attach to furniture and takes maybe 10 mins to put together. It's about 5 feet tall. Very lightweight cover slides over the steel frame and zips st the bottom.
