Road Narrows Right Permanent Post Mounted Sign - Dia 517 R2/RA2 (Face Only)The road narrows on the right side sign is to diagram 517R. It gives an advance warning of the road narrowing on the other side of the road. This creates a potential hazard as oncoming vehicles may cross over the centre line. For areas where the road narrows on the left (near side) use the "Road Narrows Left" Sign. The diagram usually won't be used if the narrowing doesn't remove a lane from the junction and the lane does not have a severe taper.

The road narrows on the right side sign is to diagram 517R. It gives an advance warning of the road narrowing on the other side of the road. This creates a potential hazard as oncoming vehicles may cross over the centre line. For areas where the road narrows on the left (near side) use the "Road Narrows Left" Sign. The diagram usually won't be used if the narrowing doesn't remove a lane from the junction and the lane does not have a severe taper. Table 4-1 on page 19 of the Traffic Signs Manual, Chapter 4 covers the specific taper criteria.

You will find this diagram before a turning where the opposite lane gets smaller. It is necessary wherever a lane is lost on a single carriageway road or where the centre line has faded from repeated wear. Vehicles with wide clearance may cause problems in these areas, especially a turning, so would be used with the plate 575, "Oncoming Vehicles in Middle of Road". Other plates which can be used are:
