COURSE OVERVIEW:

Welcome to the course, Support Clients with Alcohol & Other Drugs Issues, where we explore the complexities of providing assistance to individuals grappling with challenges related to alcohol and other drug (AOD) use. Throughout this course, we'll delve into various aspects of AOD support services, including understanding substance use disorders, the impact of AOD use on individuals and communities, evidence-based interventions, and cultural competence in AOD support.

We begin by defining the scope of AOD support services and recognising their critical role in public health. Understanding historical perspectives on AOD use and support services provides context for the evolution of AOD support over time and highlights the importance of addressing these issues effectively.

Delving into substance use disorders, we explore different types of substances, their effects on the body and mind, diagnostic criteria for substance use disorders, and the neurobiology of addiction and dependence. This foundational knowledge helps in comprehending the complexities of AOD-related challenges.

The impact of AOD use extends beyond individuals to communities, with consequences ranging from physical health implications to psychological, emotional, social, and economic impacts. Addressing these multifaceted impacts is essential for providing comprehensive support and promoting overall well-being.

Stigma and discrimination often surround AOD use disorders, creating barriers to seeking help and receiving appropriate support. We'll discuss strategies for addressing stigma, promoting acceptance, and advocating for anti-stigma campaigns to create a more supportive environment.

Taking a holistic approach, we explore the biopsychosocial model of addiction, considering biological, psychological, and social/environmental factors that contribute to addiction and understanding addiction from a comprehensive standpoint.

Examining the pharmacology of commonly used substances provides insights into their effects and mechanisms, aiding in understanding their impact on individuals and guiding intervention strategies.

Co-occurring mental health disorders are common among individuals with AOD use issues. Integrated treatment approaches, alongside strategies for addressing mental health needs within AOD support, are crucial for comprehensive care.

Harm reduction principles, such as needle exchange programs, safer injecting practices, and overdose prevention strategies, play a vital role in minimising harm associated with AOD use and promoting safer practices.

Evidence-based interventions, including cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), motivational enhancement therapy (MET), dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), and motivational interviewing techniques, are explored for their effectiveness in supporting individuals with AOD issues.

Recognising and respecting cultural diversity, addressing cultural barriers to treatment, and implementing culturally tailored interventions are essential for providing inclusive and effective support to clients from diverse backgrounds.

Our goal is to equip you with the knowledge, skills, and empathy necessary to provide compassionate and effective support to clients facing AOD issues, promoting holistic well-being and supporting them on their journey towards recovery and improved quality of life.

Cutest sandals for your little one (as long as they aren't learning to walk)
Size: 6 Toddler, Color: Brown/White
The sandals are adorable and great quality. However, when I showed the pediatrician before putting them on our 14 month old who is walking everywhere. She said "do not use" for children who are just learning to walk...these are great for those that aren't a "toddler" yet.

Size up for sure!
Size: 9 Toddler, Color: Matt Black
Bought these as a gift for my niece who wears a size 8 in toddlers. There is a note to size up from the seller but you may need to size up 3x. Ordered a 9 in the cozy jelly sandals, one size up as suggested & they were way too small. So I tried them on my other niece who is wearing a size 6 in toddlers & the 9 fit her perfect. She loved them & walked comfortably, she didn’t stomp as she usually does if the shoes are too heave or firm. & they have a nice sweet smell. I like that the Velcro straps adjust to fit her snug enough to hold her skinny foot in place. Definitely like the look, feel & quality. The sizing is really difficult to get right, I imaging depending on the style this may also differ.

So cute but runs very SMALL!
Size: 5 Toddler, Color: Brown/White, Size: 5 Toddler, Color: Brown/White
These are SO cute and smell so yummy however they run extremely SMALL! My daughter is a size 3.5-4c and j had read other reviews that they run small so I ordered her a size 5 thinking they’d fit perfect and they were still to small! Sending back and going to order a 6 instead in hopes that will fit because they are so cute and feel very comfy.

Disappointed
Size: 6 Toddler, Color: Pink/Glitter
Sandal is poorly designed. The sizing is completely inaccurate and the shoe fits awkwardly on the foot.
