A Long-fiber, Combed Organic Wool from Germany for Needle Felting & Spinning
This wool is chosen for moments when how something is made matters just as much as what is made. Dyed with roots, bark, leaves, and blossoms rather than synthetic color, Filges Fairy Tale Wool carries a depth and integrity meant for intentional handwork—projects created slowly, with care, and meant to last.
Made from 100% kbT Bioland–certified organic sheep’s wool, this fairy tale wool offers living, earth-anchored color—never flat, never artificial. Each shade reflects the season, soil, plant, and fiber it came from, giving the wool a quiet luminosity that feels at home in Waldorf-inspired classrooms, studios, and family handwork.
Why this wool feels different
Filges Fairy Tale Wool is combed and long-fibered, meaning the fibers are aligned rather than tangled. This preparation allows:
- Fast, responsive dry needle felting with fewer pokes
- Smooth surface work and refined detail
- Successful beginner spinning, especially with a drop spindle
Longer fibers twist together more securely, which is what makes this wool well-suited for spinning and for building form efficiently with a felting needle. It excels where clarity of line, gentle color transitions, and fiber alignment matter.
While this fairy tale wool can be used for wet felting, particularly for surface layers, decorative elements, and pictorial work, it truly shines in dry needle felting, spinning, and detailed applications. For projects that require dense structure and significant shrinkage through wet felting, we recommend Filges Merino Felting Wool, which is a better wool for wet felting. We have it in both Assorted Organic Merino Wool and single colors of Organic Merino Wool.
Creative ways families and classrooms use this wool
Beyond traditional felting projects, customers often choose this wool for:
- Waldorf-inspired birthday crowns and seasonal figures
- Fairy and nature mobiles with plant-true color stories
- Needle-felted animals, butterflies, and story characters
- Painting with wool on linen or felt backgrounds
- Easter basket grass and nature table scenes
- Introductory hand spinning with a drop spindle
The colors feel grounded and expressive — never loud — supporting imaginative work rooted in nature and story.

Notes on plant-dyed color
Plant dyes are inherently alive. Color may vary slightly from batch to batch due to season, harvest conditions, and plant origin — even when the same plant species is used. These colors coordinate beautifully with Filges plant-dyed yarns, though they are not exact matches. Natural plant dyes interact uniquely with different wool types and fiber preparations, resulting in organic variation that is expected and celebrated.
Safety Note:
⚠️ WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD - Small Parts. Keep away from children under 3 yrs.
Children who still put things in their mouth could bite off a small amount of wool and then either inhale or choke on the wool.
