Mission 770 Bookshelf Loudspeakers at Vinyl Sound Toronto Canada

The Mission 770 is a two-way standmount loudspeaker from Mission (Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom), available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. Designed by IAG's Director of Acoustic Design Peter Comeau and manufactured in Mission's purpose-built 25,000 sq ft facility in Huntingdon, the 770 revives one of British Hi-Fi's most celebrated designs, originally introduced in 1978. This reimagined classic pairs a 20cm mineral-loaded polypropylene mid/bass driver with a 28mm microfibre soft dome tweeter, delivering bass extension to 30Hz (-6dB) in a real-wood veneered cabinet that is both acoustically advanced and visually iconic.

Polypropylene Driver Technology

The heart of the Mission 770 is its newly developed 20cm mineral-loaded polypropylene mid/bass driver, built on an 8-inch die-cast chassis with enlarged rear windows to minimize early reflections back through the cone. The cone is loaded with minerals to increase stiffness, producing fast, tight bass that accurately conveys the character of bass instruments. A low-density nitrile surround is carefully matched to the cone's impedance to further suppress edge reflections. The reflex port is tuned to a very low frequency and strongly flared at both inlet and outlet to smooth airflow, eliminate distortion, and extend bass cleanly below 30Hz in room — an exceptional result for a speaker of this cabinet size.

28mm Microfibre Dome Tweeter

The Mission 770's high-frequency unit is a 28mm woven textile soft dome tweeter featuring a high-flux ferrite magnet. Its lightweight, damped microfibre dome delivers an ultra-smooth response with no harshness or grain. A damped rear chamber pushes the fundamental resonance well below the 2.9kHz crossover point, ensuring a seamless handover from the mid/bass driver. The result is extended, detailed high-frequency reproduction that integrates naturally with the midrange for consistent tonal character across the full audio band.

Twin-Wall Cabinet Construction

The cabinet departs from the original 770's BBC-influenced thin-wall damping approach, instead using a modern twin-wall sandwich of high-density MDF and particle board bonded by a high-damping adhesive layer. This construction drives panel resonances well below audibility, eliminating cabinet coloration at all frequencies. Internal bracing strengthens the front baffle and mechanically couples the drive units to the cabinet, improving dynamic performance and revealing fine microdynamic detail. Strategic acoustic foam and damping fibre absorb internal reflections without over-damping the bass. The enclosure is finished in real-wood walnut or black veneer with a signature white laminated front baffle, echoing the iconic aesthetic of the original 1970s and 1980s design.

Precision Crossover Engineering

Mission's crossover network for the 770 is the product of over 1,000 hours of listening tests and more than 170 circuit iterations before the final design was settled. Mounted on separate bass and treble PCBs with short signal paths, the crossover uses super-transparent polypropylene capacitors and air-core inductors for maximum signal purity. Advanced software crossover mapping allowed Peter Comeau's team to define acoustic crossover slopes with high precision, while extensive subjective listening ensured the result is musically coherent, seamless, and emotionally involving across all genres and source material.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Mission 770?

The Mission 770 is a two-way bass-reflex standmount loudspeaker from Mission, engineered and manufactured in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom. It features a 20cm mineral-loaded polypropylene mid/bass driver, a 28mm microfibre soft dome tweeter, an 88dB sensitivity rating, and a frequency response extending from 42Hz to 20kHz (+/-3dB), with bass reaching to 30Hz in room. It is a modern re-engineering of Mission's original 1978 loudspeaker, one of the most commercially successful British loudspeakers ever produced.

How does the Mission 770 compare to the KEF R3 Meta and the Bowers and Wilkins 705 S3?

The Mission 770 occupies a distinct position among premium standmount loudspeakers. Compared to the KEF R3 Meta, the 770 offers significantly greater cabinet volume (38.5L vs approximately 13L) and deeper bass extension, making it a more large-scale, room-filling performer. The KEF R3 Meta uses Uni-Q coincident driver technology for a different imaging characteristic, while the Mission prioritizes bass weight and tonal warmth. Against the Bowers and Wilkins 705 S3, the 770 presents a warmer, more musically rounded presentation with more low-end authority, whereas the 705 S3 is typically leaner and more analytically focused. What Hi-Fi? recognized the Mission 770 as their standmount award winner from 2022 through 2024 in its price class, a distinction not simultaneously held by either competitor.

Can the Mission 770 be used as a genuine full-range speaker without a subwoofer?

Yes, the Mission 770 performs convincingly as a full-range system for most listeners and music types without a subwoofer. Its bass extension reaches 30Hz at -6dB in room, which is exceptional for a standmount design and covers the lowest octaves of bass guitar, double bass, piano, and most orchestral instruments. The combination of a large 38.5-litre cabinet, a mineral-loaded 20cm driver, and a precision-tuned flared reflex port produces bass that is both extended and clean, avoiding the one-note character common to many smaller bass-reflex speakers. A subwoofer may still benefit home theatre or bass-heavy applications, but for two-channel music listening the 770 stands alone with confidence.

What is the twin-wall cabinet construction used in the Mission 770?

Twin-wall cabinet construction is a method in which two separate panel layers, in this case high-density MDF and particle board, are bonded together using a high-damping adhesive. Each layer controls the resonant behavior of the other, and the adhesive itself absorbs vibrational energy between them. The result is a cabinet with panel resonances pushed well below audibility, preventing the cabinet from adding its own coloration to the sound. This approach replaces the original 770's BBC-influenced thin-wall and bitumen-damping method with a more modern, effective technique that allows the drive units to operate without mechanical interference from the enclosure walls.

Where can I buy the Mission 770 in Toronto or Canada?

The Mission 770 is available at Vinyl Sound, an authorised Mission dealer located in Toronto, Canada. Vinyl Sound carries the full Mission lineup and offers expert guidance on system matching and amplifier pairing for the 770. Customers across Canada can contact Vinyl Sound directly for purchasing options, availability, and advice on integrating the Mission 770 into their listening system.

What amplifier power does the Mission 770 require?

The Mission 770 is compatible with amplifiers delivering between 25W and 200W into 8 ohms. Its 88dB sensitivity (2.83V at 1m) and 8-ohm nominal impedance (6-ohm minimum) make it a reasonably easy load for most integrated and stereo power amplifiers. It performs well with both solid-state and valve designs, and its broad power handling range means it suits everything from modestly powered integrated amplifiers to high-current separates. For the best results, Mission recommends an amplifier with a stable output into 6 ohms and sufficient current delivery to control the large mid/bass driver at higher volumes.

What makes the Mission 770 crossover significant?

The Mission 770 crossover is the result of more than 1,000 hours of listening tests and over 170 circuit iterations, designed by Peter Comeau using both advanced software measurement tools and extensive subjective evaluation. Mounted on separate bass and treble PCBs with short signal paths, it uses polypropylene capacitors and air-core inductors for low coloration and high transparency. The 2.9kHz crossover point is chosen to place the transition between the two drivers in an acoustically favorable region, and the slopes are mapped with precision to ensure a seamless blend. This level of development is unusual at any price point and is a primary reason the speaker received Stereophile Recommended Component status and multiple What Hi-Fi? Awards.

Is the Mission 770 suitable for both vinyl and digital sources?

The Mission 770 is well suited to both vinyl and digital playback. Its warm, natural tonal character and extended bass were originally developed to complement analog sources, and those qualities translate equally well to high-resolution digital streaming, CD, and DAC-based systems. The speaker's coherent, low-coloration presentation means it reveals the character of the source rather than imposing a fixed sonic signature, making it a versatile choice for mixed-format listening systems. Reviewers at SoundStage Hi-Fi and What Hi-Fi? specifically praised the 770's neutrality and musicality across a wide range of recordings and source types.

The new amp/speaker configuration made a very noticeably positive difference.
Size: Pair, Size: Pair
I bought a Denton amp / Klipsch 7 speaker bundle for Christmas last year. It sounded impressive. For this year, I recently replace the Denon AVR-S970H, a 5.2.2 POS-Amp that quit after less than a year. Then I also added a 70” TV and a set of R-51M’s on the sides. I could never hear this amp driving the Dolby Atmos speakers on top of the R-625FA towers, so I decided that back speakers would be more beneficial to this 7-channel system. I’d been using the R-41M’s that came in the bundle as side surround speakers, but I was thinking that they would be more suited for use in back. So I replaced them with a new set of R-51M’s that I thought would be better surround sides because of their fuller stronger sound. As of now, at the front of this theater system is an Onkyo TX-RZ 820 AVR amp, a 70 inch LED 4K smart TV, a set of Klipsch R-625FA towers, an R-52C Center Channel Speaker, and two R-12SW Subwoofers. For the surround sides is the newly purchased set of R-51M’s on stands, and mounted on the back-wall is the set of R-41M’s, using BS-218pro Wall Mounts. For good reason, this is a very powerful amp driving a complete set of purely Klipsch speakers. I built this THX 7.2.0 surround sound system to go in my wife’s 11’ X 12’ privacy room, specifically because she is hard of hearing. She said, that with the new additions, the sound is much cleaner, stronger, the 3D surround effect is more noticeable, and the vocals are easier for her to understand. I get to use it sometimes when she’s not at home. Thunder in movies sounds as crisp sharp and loud as real thunder. All around, the system is very realistic sounding. And it can play music, shaking the house at live levels. At present, my wife and I are extremely happy with this system. It sounds as good as it looks. The Klipsch speakers & Onkyo amp configuration makes a very noticeably positive difference.

Quality shrink tubing.
Size: 4.8mm (3/16") - 26Ft, Color: Black
This seems to be solid quality shrink tubing, shrinks well, and holds firmly. I have used it for a few projects so far and am happy with how it has performed. The package is larger than I expected, but keeps the tubing from being damaged from bends/kinks.

I recently tried out the TKDMR Heat Shrink Tubing, and it has proven to be a game-changer in my cable management endeavors! As an OCD handyman who values organization and neatness, I was on the lookout for a reliable solution to streamline my cable/wire setups, and this product exceeded my expectations in everyway. *Ease of shrink (5/5):* One of the best features of the heat shrink tubing is its ease of application. The tubing is remarkably pliable, easy to cut and straightforward to work with. The simple process involves sliding the tubing over the cable and applying heat, whether from a heat gun, lighter or even a hairdryer! The tubing quickly shrinks snugly around the cable, providing a tight and professional-looking finish. Even for those new to DIY cable management, the learning curve is minimal. *Versatility (5/5):* I was pleasantly surprised by the versatility of this heat shrink tubing. It accommodated various cable sizes and shapes, making it a versatile solution for a range of applications. Whether dealing with computer cables, audio cords, electrical box wiring or even small electronic components, the tubing adapted to the different sizes seamlessly. The only slight drawback is that extreme size differences between cables might require different tubing sizes for an optimal fit, This tubing is rather large, but shrinks very small when done carefully. I have fixed many action figures and dinosaurs' broken arms to the delight of my son! *Durability (5/5):* Once applied, the heat shrink tubing forms a durable and resilient layer around the cables. It provides an added layer of thick protection against water, wear/tear, etc. safeguarding cables from potential damage due to friction, bending, or exposure. This durability is incredibly beneficial for long-term use and in environments where cables may be subject to constant movement or handling. Especially useful for reinforcing phone charging cords! I'm looking at you cheap apple cords. *Looks (5/5):* Beyond its practical usage, TKDMR Heat Shrink Tubing significantly enhances the aesthetics of cable management. The tubing creates a sleek and uniform appearance, concealing multiple cables into a tidy bundle. The matte finish looks professional and modern, elevating the overall visual appeal of any setup. It's a small detail that makes a big difference, especially for those who value a clean and organized workspace, or computer cable management! *Value for your hard earned Money (5/5):* Considering the improvement it brings to cable management and the quality of the product, this Heat Shrink Tubing offers excellent value for money. The quantity provided in each package is generous, ( a little goes a long way) and the overall durability ensures that one application will last for years. While the initial cost may be slightly higher than alternative cable management solutions like zip ties etc., the long-term protection benefits make it a worthwhile investment. *Overall Impressions:* TKDMR Heat Shrink Tubing has proven to be a highly effective and reliable solution for many purposes. Its ease of shrink, versatility, durability, and aesthetic enhancements make it a awesome product in the market. Whether you're a tech enthusiast, DIY enthusiast, or just someone looking to tidy up your living or working space, this heat shrink tubing is a must-have! Not to mention the satisfying process of shrinking tubes onto wires. I recommend this heat shrink tubing to anyone seeking a practical and visually pleasing solution for cable organization/wiring maintenance!
