Often depicted as a dove connected to a ribbon or branch, Saint Espirit was a popular motif in late 18th and mid-19th century French jewelry. The bird is symbolic of the Holy Spirit, while the ribbon represents peace and faith. Circa 1880’s, this sterling silver pendant is articulated into three segments—a bail, ribbon, and the body of a dove—which allows for movement as the pendant dangles. The patina and darkened sterling silver offset the paste stones and create a bold contrast.
Though the piece is unmarked, it is most likely French. The paste stones are hand cut and bead set into the piece. The pendant is 1 5/8” tall and 7/8” wide. It weighs 4.1 grams. The original bail has an s-hook with a diameter of 4mm.
This pendant can be worn as a symbol of love and faith.
