This book is a detailed investigation of the little understood structure, management and effectiveness of the Jacobite Army of the '45, from its muster at Glenfinnan in August 1745 to its demise as a formed body on the battlefield of Culloden Moor nine months later.
After a brief look at the political background of the '45 and the expedition to Scotland the author takes us through the HQ structure and its personalities; critical support functions which enabled the army to be controlled, fed and paid; methods and areas of recruitment; a detailed look at the component parts of the army; its uniform, standards, weapons, tactics and command systems. There is a close assesment of troop types, including the French, and observations of the those who saw the army march past.
The copious appendices include a short history of every regiment in the Jacobite army.
