USS Indianapolis delivered the atomic bomb components to Tinian Island in July 1945 — the mission that made possible the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Because her mission was secret, her absence was not noticed for four days, during which nearly 600 of her crew of 1,196 died — many from shark attacks — in the worst sea disaster in US Naval history.
