Meaning of the Symbol. The Trinity Knot is the simplest of the Celtic knots. The Celts were very familiar with the idea of the trinity. There were many things in their culture that came in threes; the three stages of womanhood (maid, mother, crone) and the three elements (earth, fire, water) are two good examples of this. Early Christians used the Celts understanding of the trinity to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) and Christians embraced using this knot as a symbol to express that concept in many of the early Christian illuminated manuscripts, such as the Book of Kells.
