Southampton’s Lost Streets – St Mary’s and Golden Grove looks back to a time when the town’s old Victorian streets, with their tightly packed terraces, housed much of the workforce that powered the docks, shipping, railways and local industries.

Many of those streets no longer exist, having been cleared away almost 60 years ago, while some remain in name only and are entirely unrecognisable from how they were in times gone by.

Through a mixture of images, maps, and details of long standing residents, it is once again possible to have an insight to the past and a view of how things were at a time now almost forgotten.

In his previous book, Southampton’s Chapel Area – A Hundred Years of the Past, Dave Marden retraced the streets of his youth and now extends those memories further to the long disappeared neighbourhoods of St Mary’s and Golden Grove.

About the Author

An established author of several books on railways and local history, Dave Marden now writes about the place where he was born and brought up. As a native Sotonian, having been born in the city’s Chapel area and educated locally at both Ascupart Junior (now St Mary’s) and Central Secondary schools, he spent his entire career working in the Port of Southampton before retirement.

While growing up in the post war years and in the 1950s, he remembers much of his home town as it was before the major redevelopments of the 1960s when so many of the old streets and communities were cleared away in the name of progress and modernisation.

Customer feedback:

"I am a family researcher living in the Midlands. My family on my paternal grandmother's side lived in St Georges St, St Marys at the time of the 1911 census. I have just bought your book on Southampton's lost Streets and for the first time been able to locate this street on the bottom left of page 14, the unmarked road the west of Evans Street. I have found the book very useful. Many thanks to Mr Marden for sharing his research and knowledge."

Nice shirt for the price
Color: White, Size: Large
Good quality shirt, especially for the price. Drapes nicely, almost a painterly feel with the fabric. Works across the wardrobe spectrum, pairing well with slacks in a business setting or with chinos for a more casual look.

Great Fit and Price While Updating My Wardrobe
Color: Shortbread, Size: Large
As I’ve been getting fitter, my old clothes started looking too baggy, so I needed something that fit better without breaking the bank. This COOFANDY chambray shirt turned out to be exactly what I was looking for—lightweight, wrinkle-resistant, and stylish enough for casual or dressy wear. The fabric feels soft and breathable, and it pairs easily with jeans or slacks. Since I’m still losing weight, I didn’t want to overspend on clothes I may size out of soon, and these hit the sweet spot for both quality and affordability.
