Kentucky outfitted twelve horse mounted infantry regiments. These regiments, with the exception of the 4th Mounted Infantry and the 49th Mounted Infantry, served their enlistments in Kentucky. The 4th Mounted Infantry Regiment saw duty with the Army of the Cumberland and WilsonÕs Cavalry Corps in Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia. The 49th Mounted Infantry Regiment served with the Army of the Ohio in Tennessee.
The contribution of the twelve Kentucky mounted infantry regiments has been overlooked by most historians telling the story of Kentucky during the Civil War. This book seeks to serve as an introduction to the military history of KentuckyÕs mounted infantry regiments.
