Issued in conjunction with a 2003 exhibition of sporting-related paintings rendered by American artist Henry Koehler (1927-2021). With an opening essay by Lorian Peralta-Ramos, and many colorful examples of Koehler's work. Horses and the hunt!

Henry Koehler was born in Louisville, KY, in 1927. He studied at Yale University in New Haven, CT. He became interested in foxhunting while at Yale and learned to ride in 1950 in order to participate. He became a graphic artist in New York City after graduation, beginning his specialization in sporting subjects in 1952 with a commission from Sports Illustrated magazine to paint a regatta in San Diego, CA; he also illustrated for the periodicals The New Yorker and Town & Country. Much of his work depicted fox hunting, polo, racing, steeplechasing and numerous other field sport subjects.

His first exhibition was in 1961 and since that time he has shown 58 times in London, Paris, Dublin, Johannesburg and throughout the United States. Racing and hunting come alive under his brush. He also offers us intimate, behind-the-scenes looks at jockeys, horses, dogs and the special accoutrements of each sport.

Koehler was a member of the Society of Illustrators in New York City, serving as its first vice president, and of the Yale Association of Fine Arts in New Haven. Koehler was a founding member, along with Jean Bowman, June Harrah, Wally Nall, Marilyn Newmark, Eve Prime, Richard S. Reeves, Sam Savitt, and Else Tuckerman, of the American Academy of Equine Art established in Middleburg, VA, in 1980 and now located at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY.

He exhibited at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco and at prominent galleries and racetracks in New York City, California, New Jersey, Virginia, Kentucky, England, Ireland, France, and Italy. Institutions holding his work include The National Sporting Library in Middleburg, VA; the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, NY; the Museum of Hounds & Hunting at Morven Park in Leesburg, VA; and the International Museum of the Horse at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.

He has painted several portraits of well-known polo ponies on commission but prefers to capture 'the flavor, sound and smell of polo'. He is unique amongst contemporary artists in being able to capture with such intimacy the world of the horse, not only on the hunting field and racecourse, but also in the boot room, jockeys racing, and in his sensitive studies of polo games & pony lines.

His loyal following of collectors has included Ralph Lauren, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Paul Mellon, John Hay Whitney, President John Kennedy, the Duke of Beaufort, Sir Evelyn de Rothschild, the Duchess of Cornwall, Senator Edward Kennedy, Mrs. George Baker, the Duchess of Windsor, the Bancroft Family, The Queen and HRH The Prince of Wales.

His works can be seen at the National Racing Museum in Saratoga and at the National Horse Racing Museum at Newmarket in Great Britain.

thrilling ride of a book
Format: Kindle
Beautiful... I love the tenderness of the father-daughter relationship, and the gentle love between rider and horse, contrasted with the raw thrill of the pre-dawn adventure. This book manages to portray something so specific - an urban horseback ride - with such deep and universal appeal.

Beautiful book!
Format: Hardcover, Format: Hardcover
This book perfectly exemplifies how soft and simple can be so magical. The lyrical language laden with sensory details, paired with the vibrant visuals, makes for an absolute treat of an experience! The father-child time at night immediately reminded me of OWL MOON and just like owling, urban horseback riding is something we’ve never experienced personally, so it was especially thrilling to experience it with my children through this book. I also love that this book is a celebration of Black culture and joy. Finding the universal through the specific is the key to any good story, and the author has a real knack for it. Just like the Abuelita in this story, my mother is the first to wake up, and we find her nestled in her chair with a cup of coffee. And the description of the little girl’s kiss on her Abuelita’s papery cheek brought back memories of my own grandmother’s papery cheek – something I miss very much. Picture books really are for everyone. All the starred reviews are so well-deserved and I’d be very surprised if this book didn’t win awards. Highly recommend!

Gorgeous, joyful, and moving
Format: Hardcover
This book is simply breathtaking, from the vibrant illustrations to the lovely father-daughter story about the precious alone time they spend together early in the morning. The effect is so powerful and visceral, it feels like you're right there experiencing it with them-- the quiet of the city at dawn, the nostalgia, the sharing of a memory that will last a lifetime. It made me long for my own cherished childhood moments. My kid was fascinated by the idea of horses on city streets, which I guess he's never seen before. And, for my part, I loved the all too rare representation of Black cowboy culture in a picture book. More books like this, please! Final moments of the book highlight the main character's belief in herself... "I'm a cowboy too!" This confidence is partly a result of the love and representation provided by her father. LOVE LOVE this book.

Hands Down Best on the Market
Scent: Sandalwood, Size: 2 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I have tried pretty much EVERY beard balm known to man at this point and while some have been okay, what makes this the hands down full on winner for me is not just it's effectiveness but it's scent. A sandalwood product that actually smells like REAL sandalwood and not some sweet, vanilla, gross whatever imitation pretty much every other "sandalwood" scented product out there these days smell like. I am so in love with the scent that I wish this were available as a cologne. As far as it's actual effectiveness, that is also five stars. It's effective without too much shine so it doesn't look too greasy. This is one of the only balms I have found that does NOT break me out. I use it for both my beard and my hair. It's an exceptional pomade! It isn't too greasy, it's got good hold. I'm not sure about conditioning quality yet, but it's been single digits temperature here and normally my beard feels very dry and kind of painful, I don't really know how else to describe it, and I haven't been having that problem since starting this product. Another bonus, it's a great barrier against wind/cold burn. I hope they don't stop selling this product because I for one know I would be a customer for life.
