In the years before the Mexican Revolution, Mexico is ruled by a tiny elite that apes European culture, grows rich from foreign investment, and prizes racial purity. The vast majority of Mexicans, who are native or of mixed native and Spanish blood, are politically powerless and slowly starving to death. Presiding over this corrupt system is Don Porfirio D az, the ruthless and inscrutable president of the Republic.
Against this backdrop, The City of Palaces opens in a Mexico City jail with the meeting of Miguel Sarmiento and Alicia Gavil n. Miguel is a principled young doctor, only recently returned from Europe but wracked by guilt for a crime he committed as a medical student ten years earlier. Alicia is the spinster daughter of an aristocratic family. Disfigured by smallpox, she has devoted herself to working with the city's destitute. This unlikely pair--he a scientist and atheist and she a committed Christian--will marry. Through their eyes and the eyes of their young son, Jos , readers follow the collapse of the old order and its bloody aftermath.
The City of Palaces is a sweeping novel of interwoven lives: Miguel and Alicia; Jos , a boy as beautiful and lonely as a child in a fairy tale; the idealistic Francisco Madero, who overthrows D az but is nevertheless destroyed by the tyrant's political system; and Miguel's cousin Luis, shunned as a "sodomite." A glittering mosaic of the colonial past and the wealth of the modern age, The City of Palaces is a story of faith and reason, cathedrals and hovels, barefoot street vendors and frock-coated businessmen, grand opera and silent film, presidents and peasants, the living and the dead.

Better Than I Hoped
Color: blue, Color: blue
I have had Apple Watches for the past 6 or so years. I wanted to try out a basic watch again. I looked at digital watches but some were still over $100. I thought I’d give this watch a try as the price made it a pretty low risk. No notes. It looks great and does what watches are supposed to do. I wish it had a vibrate so I could use it as an alarm clock without waking up my wife.

this is the perfect daily everyday use digital watch........
Color: Black
hands down the best edc digital watch available, this watch is everything you need at a quarter of the cost of other digital watches. we all know the durability of iron man watches its legendary, but where this watch beats even other iron man offerings is the size of the digital numbers displayed a bit larger for aging eyes and what makes it even more durable than the other iron man watch's is that the instructional labeling of the buttons is under the glass and wont fade or rub off under use making it look cleaner and newer for longer. now lets mention the size or foot print of this watch, i own several watches from competing brands and almost once a day i hit the watch on something a door knob a table corner, but when I'm wearing this Timex 40mm i never hit it on anything due to the thinness of the watch.
