The custodian Grenache 2021
 McLaren Vale, Grenache (100%)
 The Name
During the vine pull scheme in the 80s,
d’Arry Osborn refused to remove his old
Grenache vineyards. Today, d’Arenberg is
the keeper of nearly one-third of McLaren
Vale’s old bush vine Grenache, earning the
title of ‘Custodian’ of the variety.
The Vintage
The preceding winter was beautifully wet,
flushing the soil of salts and filling the soil
profile. Spring was also wetter than average,
with rainfall continuing until November,
which was almost completely dry. November
was hotter than normal, upsetting the
setting of berries—just as well, as the bunch
number was way up.
Two inches of rain in early February were
much appreciated by the relatively large
crops. Where crops were smaller, berry size
grew. The heat produced rapid flowering,
set, and berry development, leading to an
early veraison and the equal earliest start of
vintage on record. A few consecutive days
around 35°C in February rapidly ripened
early, lower-cropping vineyards. From then
on, the vintage was mild and dry. Average
temperatures for autumn were lower than
usual. Some warm 30°C days in late March
and early April helped finish ripening the
larger crops and late-ripening varieties.

 The Winemaking
Small batches of grapes are gently crushed
and transferred to open fermenters. Foot
treading is undertaken two-thirds of the way
through fermentation. The wine is basket
pressed and transferred to old French oak
to complete fermentation and mature. The
barrel ferments are aged on lees, and there
is no racking until final blending. This wine
does not undergo fining or filtration prior to
bottling.
The Characteristics
Bright ruby red.
Lifted aromas of red cherries, cranberries,
and red plums, with a hint of bouquet garni.
Generous red fruits with a slight savoriness
on the palate, rounded out with complex
graphite tannins.
An elegant and complex example with loads
of flavor and interest

A Experience to Be Read
Format: Paperback
I bought the first issue when the series debuted but couldn't afford to continue. So I'm glad I found this volume 1 trade paperback. On first read, it has a few inspirations from Japanese manga from panel layouts to manga/anime character tropes. That being the case, it carves its own identity as a romance story between a normal orphan boy and a centuries old vampire and their daily lives in an alternate history USA. I like mash-up of different cultures from German and Japanese to Spanish and English including the music, the written languages, and other aspects. Nights has a vibe not everyone will like off bat, but I'll will vouch that anyone should give it a try.

Overwhelming Great!
Format: Paperback
This was mind blowingly good. Haven’t read anything in a long time where every character’s backstory was so well written and interesting. The story rocks, it’s almost overwhelming. I will be on the hunt for the individual issues because there’s no way I’m waiting for the next trade paperback.

Best new comic I have read in a while
Format: Kindle
Interesting characters that you are immediately invested in, strange world, super fun and witty writing/dialog. You’ll really enjoy this one. Genre? Mmm alternate past/present Florida with a quirky horror bent? Just read it. You’ll thank me. :D

Just Spectacular
Format: Kindle
I just read seven issues in one sitting and turned to my husband and told him I was sad because I just read an amazing new comic but I finished it and now I have to wait for more. This story is hard to explain, or stick in any particular comic niche. There's hitmen, vampires, ghosts, teenagers performing Sweeney Todd as their school play, apocalyptic dilemmas, addiction, redemption and a talking mole. Just wow. The art is really crisp, colorful and clean. If you liked Middlewest, I think you'll love this. Looking forward to more from these creators.
