Goat Willow (Salix caprea)Goat Willow (Salix caprea) Why Goat Willow? No one seems quite sure it's nothing botanical. It might have been grown to feed goats who knows. It's the odd one out, as Goat willow (or Pussy Willow, or Great Sallow) doesn't necessarily need wet, although it grows as quickly as our other native willows. Salix caprea is dioecious too male and female flowers appear on separate trees. As other true willows as opposed to hybrids it won't grow from a rod

Goat Willow (Salix caprea)

Why Goat Willow? No-one seems quite sure - it's nothing botanical. It might have been grown to feed goats - who knows. It's the odd one out, as Goat willow (or Pussy Willow, or Great Sallow) doesn't necessarily need wet, although it grows as quickly as our other native willows. Salix caprea is dioecious too - male and female flowers appear on separate trees. As other true willows - as opposed to hybrids - it won't grow from a rod stuck in the ground. The male flowers are in the form of yellow catkins (as pictured), which are an important source of early pollen and nectar for bees in the critical period of early spring.

Value For Wildlife

In the female form Salix caprea has silver catkins, which are also an excellent source of early season nectar. There was a beautiful old Goat willow tree in our old village that was covered with our bees as soon as it came into flower - like the one pictured! Useful for the church flowers, too. Among its dependent species is the spectacular Purple Emperor, for which it is a foodplant. They seem to be second only to the oaks in terms of dependent species, which include several small mammals.

Plants For Sale

Like all the native trees we sell, our Goat willows are grown in the UK from UK origin seed. We sell 2 year old 60/90cm plants in multiples of 5.

We sell larger plants as either "feathered" or - the biggest we sell - standards. These are measure by their girth - so 6/8cm means 6 to 8cm around - and are typically over 6ft tall.

Suppliers: RV Roger, British Hardwood Trees.

See our planting and size guide for details and tips on planting. These Goat Willow trees are all bare root, and are consequently available for delivery from November until March. During the lifting season there may be up to a month's delay between placing the order and dispatching, due to weather conditions or pressure of orders, which are dealt with in date sequence. Orders for Goat Willows placed between March and September are confirmed in October ready for dispatch from November.

Have a look at our videos on what to do when your plants arrive and how to plant a bare root tree. Please ask about larger trees; we can often supply them but will need to quote on an individual basis as carriage varies so much.

I’ve had these shoes for a few months now. When I first got them, they were very painful to wear. I was wearing them pretty much every day but found them to be extremely tight. I thought perhaps the shoe just had to “stretch“ and conform to the shape of my foot, so I decided to give them a few weeks to do that. After a few weeks, they were still somewhat painful to wear. It was only until just within the last month or so that they have become painless to wear. So please be aware that you might find the shoes to be very uncomfortable when you first get them. Give them a chance to stretch and adapt to the shape and contours of your feet, though. The shoes are extremely lightweight and very flexible and bendable. They almost seem cheap in that regard, so I’m not sure what to make of that. I’ve never had a pair of shoes like this that were so flexible. I’m used to having a hard, rigid sole and an inflexible upper. The shoes do look very nice and seem to be holding up well. People have complained in their reviews that the stitching at the back on the heel comes undone. I haven’t noticed that with mine — yet. That is the only part of the shoe that doesn’t seem to be designed very well. Why put stitching in such a precarious place on the shoe? This is the first shoe I have ever seen that has stitching on the heel like that. But, as I mentioned, my stitching is NOT coming undone like many others have reported. PROS: 1) The shoe seems to fit comfortably after a couple months of extreme discomfort. Still not the most comfortable shoe overall, though 2) The shoe looks nice! CONS: 1) The shoes seemed very tight when I first got them and stayed that way for a couple of months thus ensuring extreme discomfort and pain when walking in them. 2) The stitching in the heel is a bad design! 3) Due to the shoes being extremely lightweight and flexible, they almost seem cheaply made. RECOMMENDED WITH HESITANCE
