Welcome to the next instalment of the sought after Great Engravers Collection, the Waterloo Medal by Benedetto Pistrucci. The medal commissioned in 1819 and not finished until 1849 was never struck at the time due to concerns that attempts to make working dies from the original work would destroy the work.
This is part one of a 2 coin series that will feature both the original reverse and obverse of the medal. Both coins in the series will feature the Martin Jennings portrait on their obverses. The four rulers of the nations triumphant at the Battle of Waterloo, surrounded by a mythological allegory evoking peace. Upon completion by Pistrucci, it was noted that "all the great men to whom it was intended that a specimen of the medal should be given were dead, save only the Iron Duke"
