Why is Dysphagia Dangerous?
Dysphagia is a swallowing condition that can occur from disability or a head injury, but is very common among stroke victims. Since strokes can reduce sensation in the body, patients may not notice food or liquid accidentally entering the lungs (also known as silent aspiration), which increases the risk of developing pneumonia.
Successful and Safe Swallowing
Safe swallowing is usually accomplished by maintaining the chin in a tucked down position, however many mugs or glassware are not able to facilitate this. The Nosey Cut-Out Cup has been created to avoid contact with the nose when the cup is tilted, which then allows a user to drink liquid from a cup without tipping their head back or craning their neck.
