Washburn's Metal shifter mounting box with bearing-supported shaft and linkage — a heavy-duty replacement for the factory shifter mounting box used on VW Beetle, Bus, and other Type 1 / Type 2 applications. Built for street, off-road, and torsion-raise applications where the factory box's tolerances and durability come up short. Part #CH35.

Why upgrade the shifter mounting box

The shifter on a classic VW pivots at a small mounting box welded or bolted to the chassis tunnel. Inside the box, the shifter shaft rides in factory-style bushings that wear over time, allowing the shifter to develop lateral and vertical slop. The result is the famously vague VW shifter feel — you stir the shifter around looking for the gate, the engagement is mushy, and finding reverse becomes a small adventure on every start.

Our shifter mounting box uses a tapered, slotted engagement cup for positive shifter location and a bearing-supported shaft for crisp, repeatable feel. It works with any standard VW shifter and eliminates the play that makes factory shifter boxes feel old.

For torsion-raise applications (lifted off-road builds) and shortened-pan builds where the shifter location shifts forward, our box gives you a proper, rigid mounting point that doesn't introduce new sloppiness on top of whatever you're trying to fix.

FAQ

Will this fix my sloppy shifter?
A worn factory shifter box is one of the top three causes of sloppy VW shifter feel (along with worn shift coupler and worn shift rod bushing). Replacing the box addresses one of those three. For a complete shifter rebuild, plan to address the coupler and the bushing as well — our #CH01 Delrin shift bushing is the recommended upgrade there.

Does it use the factory mounting location?
Yes. The box mounts at the factory shifter location on the chassis. Bolts or welds in place depending on your specific chassis and build approach.

Can I use my existing shifter handle?
Yes. The box works with any standard VW shifter — factory original, aftermarket, or short-throw. The interface is the standard VW shifter shaft.

What's a "torsion raise" application?
A torsion raise is an off-road or overlanding modification where the VW front and rear torsion housings are rotated to lift the car. This changes shifter angle and location, and many torsion-raise builds need a different shifter mounting solution than stock. Our box handles those geometry changes.

Will it work on a Manx or shortened-pan buggy?
Yes, with appropriate mounting. The box itself works; you'll need to position it correctly for your shortened chassis. For Manx applications, see also our shortened shift rods (#CH20A/B/C depending on donor year).

Is the bearing serviceable?
The bearing is sealed for the life of the box. No periodic maintenance required.

Love this stuff!
Style: SPF 50
I use this every day and I love how it is frangrance free and creamy. I have a very fair complexion and I will say it leaves a slight white cast but it doesn’t bother me because it almost makes my fairness more creamy looking. My skin texture has improved since wearing it daily and no allergies from it. I highly recommend especially if you have fairer skin otherwise it may leave a cast .

Excellent mineral sunscreen with minimal white cast.
Style: SPF 50
This is one of the healthier sunscreens I’ve found so far. You’re not likely going to find a mineral sunscreen that doesn’t leave some white cast. However, this one rubs in pretty good with minimal cast. You can dab on and rub in fairly easily… as long as you don’t use too much the white cast should be minimal. I am not sure how well this would work on darker skin tones. My arms are a medium skin tone… my legs are more of a light-medium tone. I prefer mineral sunscreens, and this is the best one I found so far and compatible to Supergoop mineral play. If you liked that one, you would likely enjoy this Coola one too.

Would not recommend
Style: SPF 50
I literally never write reviews but felt compelled to write one for this sunscreen because I was very caught off guard by all the positive reviews. This sunscreen leaves the most insane white sheen that never soaks in and gets on EVERYTHING. I put this on and drove to the beach and had sunscreen on my car seat, the steering wheel, the center console, the door, EVERYWHERE! It took forever to clean up and was such a hassle and that was after having let the sunscreen soak into my skin for an hour. Also the sunscreen is really thick and difficult to spread and makes you look ghostly white. Plus, the sunscreen has a really odd odor that reminded me of play dough? That might not be a negative thing for everyone but I found it unpleasant. There are definitely better mineral sunscreens out there. For the price I expected a much better product.

Sticky and white
Style: SPF 50
The sunscreen has a very sticky and thick texture. It will keep you from getting sunburnt, but it will also leave you with a white color.

Good sunscreen
Style: SPF 50
Super good coverage and it lasts a long time in the sun and even through water activities. The only negative is the white cast. Not as bad as others but just be aware it doesn’t fully rub in.
