Mary Washington asparagus is a classic variety cherished for its tender, flavorful spears and dependable performance. This perennial plant thrives in full sun and well-draining soil, offering consistent harvests each spring.

Known for its resistance to rust and other common asparagus diseases, Mary Washington is a low-maintenance choice for gardeners. Its sweet, mild flavor makes it ideal for fresh eating, steaming, or incorporating into recipes. With its heritage status and reliable productivity, Mary Washington asparagus is a must-have for any vegetable garden.

This is the most popular U.S. variety of asparagus, the standard commercial strain. It is resistant to some rust and blight and offers a cutting season of six weeks. Produces long straight spears with tight tips. Mary Washington asparagus crowns are long lived and well adapted to West Coast conditions. Mary Washington is the hardiest asparagus strain tested by our supplier.

  • 10 root crowns per bundle
  • Crowns are 2 years old
  • Hardy in USDA zones 3-9
  • Asparagus prefers a sweet soil with a pH of 6.8 to 7.2
  • Taste is sweet and nutty
  • Harvest April to May

Note: Do not be alarmed if there is small amounts of bluish-white mold on your rootstock, this is absolutely normal. It occurs from the cold storage process used to keep the plants dormant. This mold can be wiped off and will not affect the health of the plant. However, if the plants are rotten and/or mushy, please give us a call.

Planting asparagus can be a rewarding and delicious addition to any garden. Asparagus Mary Washington is a standard commercial strain and popular U.S. variety known for its long, straight spears with tight tips, making it a preferred choice for many gardeners.

Here's a guide to successfully grow asparagus:

Soil Preparation:

Asparagus prefers well-draining soil with a pH level ranging from 6.8 to 7.2. Aim for a sweet soil composition to support healthy growth.

Before planting, ensure the soil is rich in organic matter by incorporating compost or aged manure. This helps provide essential nutrients for robust asparagus development.

Planting:

Asparagus is typically grown from crowns, which are the root systems of the plant. Plant crowns in early spring, as soon as the soil can be worked, to allow for ample time for establishment before the growing season.

Dig trenches around 12 inches deep and 18 inches wide. Space crowns around 12 to 18 inches apart within the trenches to ensure adequate room for growth.

Place crowns in the trenches with the roots spread out and cover them with about 2 inches of soil. As the plants grow, gradually fill in the trenches to cover the crowns completely.

Planting in a raised bed with full sun can provide an optimal space for a small home addition to the garden

Care and Maintenance:

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during the initial growing period. Asparagus requires regular watering, particularly during dry spells.

Mulch the bed with a layer of organic material, such as straw or shredded leaves, to help retain soil moisture and suppress weed growth.

Fertilize asparagus with a balanced fertilizer or compost in the spring before spears emerge to provide necessary nutrients for vigorous growth. Composted manure can be great for this.

Avoid harvesting asparagus spears during the first two years after planting to allow the plants to establish strong root systems. This patience ensures healthier yields in subsequent years.

Monitor Soil temperatures an ideal soil temperature of 70 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit is preferred.

Harvesting:

Asparagus Mary Washington typically has a cutting season lasting around 6 weeks, typically from April to May. Begin harvesting spears when they reach around 6 to 8 inches tall in height and are as thick as your finger.

Cut spears at ground level using a sharp knife or garden shears. Harvest regularly, but avoid over-harvesting to allow the remaining spears to develop fully.

Once the cutting season ends, allow the remaining spears to grow and mature into fern-like foliage. These ferns will replenish the plant's energy reserves for the next growing season.

Pest and Disease Management:

Asparagus is relatively pest and disease-resistant but may occasionally face challenges such as rust and blight. Monitor plants regularly for signs of pest infestation or disease symptoms and take appropriate measures to address them promptly.

Keep your garden healthy by removing any diseased or damaged leaves and properly getting rid of them to stop pests and diseases from spreading.

Overall, growing asparagus can be a fulfilling experience for gardeners, providing a bountiful harvest of delicious and nutritious spears. With proper care and attention to soil preparation, planting, and maintenance, you can enjoy a thriving asparagus patch for years to come.

for polar fleece slippers with leather soles, these are quite nice
Size: 8-9, Color: Red/Black Check
I bought these to replace some Mug Lugs slippers last fall after they had started to come apart from barely a year of use (they were knitted) and have been wearing them constantly since then. The polar fleece does easily pill somewhat but get a hard use and are quite comfortable too. I wear these in the house most of the time as my feet do not like to wear shoes all day. They are comfortable, and do seem to hold up well. The only other issue is until I get my office chair mat replaced, these catch and can cause problems and have a little, but not enough to worry too much about. They supposedly have an anti slip design on the bottom, but if flour falls on the kitchen floor, not so slip resistant. I chose these as one, they are red, but also plaid and like them a lot. Hopefully, I get more than a years use out of them. I have had several polar fleece sock type slippers similar to these in the past, and the last polar fleece pair in Dk Blue and from Land End finally after several years of constant use, the stitching began to come apart and the sole was separating from the body of the slipper on one slipper. They do keep the feet warm, with or without socks and can, at times, get my feet too warm but I enjoy them quite a bit.

Absolute game changer for chronically dry feet/cracked heels
Size: S (up to size 7)-Beige
I had recently bought a pair of silicone heel/ankle wraps to fill out my boot a little since I noticed my heels were lifting when I was skating. I tested them out around the house and noticed they left my heels softer while the rest of my sockless feet got quite dry. So I got these full foot silicone socks to see the effect of having my whole foot covered. I slather the entirety of my feet with Dr. Scholl's Severe Cracked Heel Restoring Balm (love how convenient it is to apply it to my feet with the solid stick form) and then slip them into these silicone socks. After just a couple hours, when I pull out my feet they're (a teeny bit sweaty at first), but then overall soft and smooth and have absorbed the balm fully leaving barely any residue in the silicone sock. I find these silicone socks generally comfortable; I wear them in the evenings while relaxing on the couch, take them off after a couple hours and let my feet breathe a bit, and then reapply my balm and socks and wear them to bed. If I wake up in the middle of the night, which I almost always do (not because of the socks), I'll take the socks off and allow my feet to breathe again. I wear a woman's size 6 shoe and the small size is pretty comfortable. However, I made the mistake of wearing them while being on my feet for a couple hours straight during household chores -- they must've somehow cut off my circulation a bit with the standing, so I wouldn't recommend wearing these silicone socks while being active. And since they're not exactly my foot size, they slide around sometimes and will start to feel tight at my big toe. But if that happens, I just tug on the toe area of the sock to give my big toe more wiggle room and problem solved. Prior to wearing these socks, I was soaking and doing heavy duty exfoliation of my feet every week. These socks seem like they'll work to help me extend the time between soakings and exfoliations. The 5 pack is a great value. So far none have torn, so they seem rather durable. Not sure what I could even do to tear a hole in these.

EXCELLENT FEET MOISTURE PROTECTION
Size: S (up to size 7)-Beige, Size: S (up to size 7)-Beige
Why did you pick this product vs others?: I have burns on my feet and needed something that I could put burn creme on and still walk around in with. I tried other silicone footsie but they would teae really easily. So far these are doing really well for this purpose. They are holding their shape too. The only caution I have is the same with all silicone footsies: They can be slippery on wet floors, so also wear with socks over them. The biggest issues is when they say a size they mean it. The silicone used in these have little give in them, so they won't stretch out and loose their shape. That can be a good thing, or not so good, depending on how well they fit your feet and what your intent is with wearing these. The other issue is if they fit snug around those toes, that tends to be where the first tear in the material will happen. Because of how these are made, the tear is actually more like cracking in the material and once it occurs you won't be able to get much use out of the sock after that. If you are planning to wear them around the house or for long term use, I suggest going up a size or look for the toeless options.

Silicone socks
Size: M (up to size 9)-Beige
The socks are sized large. The quality of the silicone is good. But they slide around on your feet if you try to walk, making them difficult to use and a bit uncomfortable. Unless you are able to sit for long periods of time the likely will not work well. Recommend looking for a better value.
