Ця книжка невідомого автора розповідає про історичний розвиток України від давнини до другої половини ХVІІІ сторіччя. Тривалий час її вважали крамольною, оскільки незаперечно стверджувався самобутній шлях розвитку й утвердження українців як окремого народу зі своїми традиціями, історією, мовою. 'Історія русів' була опублікована російською в 1846 році в Москві, українською її видали вперше в 1956 році у Нью-Йорку. Лише в 1991-му в Києві книжка побачила світ в українському перекладі Івана Драча. Він прагнув наблизити текст до сучасного читача, прибравши надмір діалектизмів і деякі неточності. У передмові перекладач зазначає: 'Ця книжка для того, щоб ми стрепенулись. Вона приходить до українців завжди у вирішальні часи. Зайве твердити, що зараз саме така пора'.
