12 januari 2010, 16u.53: een aardbeving met een kracht van 7.0 op de schaal van Richter treft Haïti. Officiële balans: 230.000 slachtoffers, 1,5 miljoen daklozen en 660.000 mensen op de vlucht in eigen land.

Jean Mentens zit in zijn flatje vlak naast Hotel Montana wanneer alles om hem heen instort. Een bloedstollend gegrom komt uit het diepst van de aarde. Als bij wonder is hij één van de weinige gasten die de ramp overleven. In de nacht en de dagen erna begint voor hem een apocalyptische zoektocht naar collega's, vrienden, water, voedsel en psychisch houvast in het compleet verwoeste Port-au-Prince, bezaaid met dode lichamen. Er is geen telefoon om zijn vrouw en kinderen te kunnen geruststellen.

Zijn diep emotionele getuigenis wisselt de auteur af met hoofdstukken over de geschiedenis, de politiek en de economische toestand van Haïti.
In de maanden na de aardbeving bezoekt hij het land opnieuw en hij houdt een dagboek bij met informatie uit de eerste hand over de inspanningen van de VN en de hulporganisaties om Haïti uit de ellende te halen.
