Common names: Broadleaf Cattail, Cat-o-Nine-Tails, Bulrush, Common Cattail,

Family: Typhaceae

Origin/Distribution: Native to all of New England. This Cattail is native to practically all of North and South America as well as Africa and western Eurasia.

Habitat: This plant is found in freshwater marshes and bogs and on riparian edges where it is constantly wet but is transitioning to a drier habitat. As long as the soil is consistently wet, they do not need standing water to grow and usually occur in water that is 8" or less in depth. The plant has evolved a leaf structure that enables it to transfer large amounts of oxygen to its submerged rhizomes.

More: Cattails offer shelter and nesting sites for waterfowl. Muskrats and beavers will feed on the young shoots and the roots. Some birds eat the seeds. Unless you have a large area to cover, grow this in a container that holds water but curtails spread. This will prevent it from dominating the entirety of your water garden. The numerous parts of the Cattail are edible and information about this alone could make a very long entry. The plant has also been used medicinally, but also has toxic properties. It has been harvested and processed for padding, flotation, roof thatch, woven mats, caulk, and adhesive. The cattails are a classic in dried flower arrangements. Remnants of this plant have been discovered in caves in Ohio dating back to between 800-1400 A.D. and I will add to this entry as I learn more about this amazing plant.

THE ABSOLUTE BEST MUG WARMER! WORKS PERFECTLY!
Color: Black
This is the best mug warmer I've ever had! It's sleek, keeps drink hot or even warm if that's what you prefer. I bought two, my niece liked mine so much she got one, and I'm getting one for my guest who comes to my house.

YEOSEN 3 Temperature Mug Warmer
Color: Black
Wow! There really are warmer mug warmers than lukewarm! This is one of them. Who wants lukewarm coffee? The YEOSEN 3 Temperature Mug Warmer on the MEDIUM temperature setting keeps my coffee HOT enough. Not lukewarm, or barely warm (even at the bottom of the cup). In fact, I use the lower temp. settings, while the level of liquid goes down. The lowest temperature is HOT enough ...not lukewarm. It's not burning, but HOT. I bought it because the reviews said it kept the coffee much warmer than lukewarm. And it does. The point is, when I walk away from my desk for 15 minutes, the temperature of my coffee is still satisfyingly hot. After all, what is lukewarm? It's a few degrees above normal body temperature! 137 is hotter than that! The unit automatically shuts off (the Off-On button is on the bottom of the unit positioned under the hot plate and the weight of the cup pushes the button to turn it on), when you pick up the cup it shuts off. I don't like the auto shut off button on the bottom of the unit. It shuts off and on every time you take a drink. Lift the cup up and it shuts off, set it back down and it turns back on. Wish you could shut that feature off. A piece of tape? but unplugging it from the wall is inconvenient. Maybe, because it's so much warmer than lukewarm, it needs some kind of safety feature. But, all in all, I would definitely buy another one.

BEST mug warmer
Color: Black
This is the best of the many mug warmers available online. It has 3 temperatures. I use the highest - 167 degrees. I like my coffee HOT. With this warmer I don’t have to return to the microwave as often to reheat my coffee. It is very easy to use- takes large mugs as well as regular sized cups. I have looked everywhere for a “flat bottomed” mug . All the mugs I have found have a rim on the bottom which prevents complete contact with the warmer. However the warmer works with the “bottom rimed “ mugs. I use my warmer for the end table by my recliner. I am considering purchasing a second warmer for my desktop. I definitely recommend this as the BEST mug warmer. I have been using it many hours daily for over a month as I am retired. It works fine. I did just purchase a second one. It came the day after I ordered it. Now I can enjoy a hot beverage by my recliner or on my desktop. I purchased a silicone cover/lid for my mug. This really keeps my beverage hot. However when you remove the lid the condensation on the underside of the lid drips. I keep a paper towel/napkin close by to catch the condensation.

Warming Up to My New Mug Warmer
Color: Black
I keep mine next to my computer monitor so I always have that quick caffeine jolt nearby. The three temperature settings are convenient and the LED readouts ensure your brew is as hot as you want it to be. Not sure about reviews saying this warmer makes drinks lukewarm because it doesn't. In fact, it can be used to reheat drinks in just a few minutes. I also like that it's a 120v plug-in and it's not the weak, slow, and temperamental USB powered one. One tip: The on-off switch is on the underside of the warmer. It must be depressed for it to power on. If the red LED doesn't indicate the temperature, then the warmer is not on (or the button is broken). You don't have to turn the unit over either to press the power button, just press down on your mug until the temperature LED turns on. The other hint is that this warmer can get very hot very quickly. While the edges stay cool to the touch, never touch the outlined hotplate area or you might get burned. Wait for it too cool down or use a pair of oven mitts---it's that hot.
