Are you looking for a splash of color in your garden year-round? Look no further than the Cascalote tree, also known as 'Caesalpinia cacalaco' and Tara cacalaco! With over 70 species in the Caesalpinia genus, Caesalpinia cacalaco is well suited for southwest desert landscapes.  This evergreen small tree or shrub is native to tropical Mexico and boasts medium green leaves with alternate, bipinnate (compound leaves that grow opposite) arrangements.

Plus, impress your friends by letting them know it was named after Andreas Caesalpinia - chief physician to Pope Clement VII! The name "cascalote" may come from the Nahuatl word "cascallotl," which means "hard shell. Cascalote" is a Spanish word that refers to the Caesalpinia cacalaco plant, also known as the Mexican or yellow bird of paradise.

But don't be fooled by its beauty - the cascalote stems are usually thorny, similar to those of a pesky rose bush. And if thorns aren't your thing, fear not! It also has a cultivated variety called 'Smoothie' that has been bred for urban use and doesn't come with all those pesky thorns. However, these thorns are well worth it when you see the striking burst of bright yellow color that this plant produces in winter and spring!

In warm climates, this little guy stays evergreen with glossy green compound leaves that will elevate any landscape. The Caesalpinia cacalaco can grow up to 20 feet tall and 15 feet wide when mature, although it typically grows to be around 10-15 feet tall and wide.

This large woody shrub can even be trained into a small patio tree.  Its seasonal pruning allows you to keep this beauty in its shrub form if you'd prefer. Additionally, Gallic and tannic acids, which are essential to the Mexican tannery industry, are abundant in cascalote.

Watering Needs

Like many other succulents, the cascalote requires moderate watering, which means that you should water it enough to keep the soil moist, but not too much that the soil becomes waterlogged. Overwatering the plant can lead to root rot and other problems. It's important to allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings, as this will help prevent issues with fungal diseases.

During the plant's active growing season in spring and summer, it may require more frequent watering (3-4 weeks), while in the winter dormant season, it may require less water (2-3 weeks). By monitoring the plant closely and adjusting your watering schedule as needed, you can help ensure that it stays healthy and thrives.

Light Requirements

The cascalote tree requires a lot of sunlight to grow properly, which means that it needs to be placed in a location where it can receive at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. If you're growing the plant indoors, it's important to place it near a sunny window or under a grow light to ensure it's getting enough light.

If you're growing the plant outdoors, make sure it's in a location that receives plenty of sunlight but is also protected from strong winds and extreme temperatures. This will help ensure that the plant stays healthy and can grow to its full potential.

Low light can negatively affect Caesalpinia cacalaco growth and health, as it needs a lot of sunlight to grow properly. If the plant is not getting enough light, it may become leggy, meaning that it will grow tall and thin with fewer leaves and flowers. Additionally, the plant may not flower as well or may not flower at all if it's not getting enough light.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The cascalote likes very airy, porous, nutrient-rich soil with a pH of 5.6- 6.5. These succulents require fast-draining soil that dries completely between waterings. Your soil must have a sandy texture and a low water-holding capacity, just like desert soil.  Soggy wet soil can damage your succulent and contributes to bacterial and fungal rot. Ideally, you want to use our specialized succulent potting mix that contains over 10 natural substrates and organic mycorrhizae to promote the development of a strong root system that helps your succulent to thrive.

And let's not forget about fertilizing! Your succulent only needs a tiny bit applied once a year in springtime with a natural fertilizer that has lower doses of NPK (5-10-5). No harsh chemicals here, folks - just pure, natural goodness that lasts longer and encourages nutrient absorption, so your succulent stays happy as a clam.

So, go ahead and give your little guy some love with some awesomely balanced fertilizer because when it comes to soil and fertilizers, we know what works best!

Hardiness Zones & More

The cascalote requires sunny, warm climates to thrive, but they can withstand mild cold temperatures. Generally, these are hardy plants that can be grown in the garden in the USDA zone 8-11 and it is an excellent houseplant for beginners because it won't suffer if you neglect to water it for a while.

If you live in a colder climate, you may need to protect the plant from frost or bring it indoors during the winter months. Additionally, it's important to make sure the succulent is in a location that is protected from strong winds, as this can also damage the Caesalpinia.

If you're unsure what hardiness zone you're in, you can check with your local nursery or garden center, or look up your location on the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map. A cascalote tree succulent tends to live for many years and grows slowly. Plant them in the spring after the weather warms up.

We think you will love this plant – order your very own Caesalpinia cacalaco - Cascalote tree today and start enjoying its beauty in no time!

Simple, durable, and a great buy for active dogs. 🐕🎾
Size: 3 PCS, Size: 3 PCS
These are exactly what I look for in a simple dog toy. The balls are made from a durable rubber material that feels sturdy enough for regular play, while still having enough give to be safe and comfortable for dogs to carry in their mouths. They bounce well, are easy to throw, and have held up nicely during play sessions. I also like the bright colors. The orange, blue, and yellow make them easy to spot in grass, at the park, or in the backyard, which means less time searching and more time playing. The textured surface gives dogs something easy to grip, and the size works well for medium to larger dogs. They feel much more substantial than the bargain-bin tennis balls that seem to fall apart after a few outings. Perhaps the best part is the value. For the price, getting three durable rubber balls is a great deal. Dog toys can get expensive quickly, and this set provides a lot of entertainment without costing much. Overall, these are durable, colorful, fun, and appear safe for everyday play. Combined with the very reasonable price point, they represent an excellent value for dog owners.

Really rough and tough and able to endure some pretty gnarly chewing!
Size: 3 PCS
These are some really stout, durable, tuff balls that are designed to endure some pretty rough chewers! They don't have the best bounce capability. If you throw one down onto pavement, it's not going to bounce back to you the same way a tennis ball would. It's probably got about half the comeback as a tennis ball, so to get the same return you would have to throw it about twice as hard as you would a tennis ball. But the balls were not designed to bounce around, they were designed to throw to your dog and play fetch and be able to endure some pretty rough gnawing and chewing while your dog is returning the ball to you. I have a 30 lb westie, and these balls are pretty much the perfect size for his medium size chomper. He is able to pick the ball up and carry it around with great ease, he is able to catch it in the air with no problem. Now my little 12 lb chihuahua is not able to carry the ball around, his mouth is just too small too be able to pick the ball up. In my opinion the asking price for these balls is really fair and reasonable! I would absolutely recommend this product to my friends and family!!

Nice quality balls for heavy chewers that are easy to clean
Size: 3 PCS, Size: 3 PCS
Nice quality heavy duty balls for strong chewers. I love that these don't have those holes in them that so many balls do that collect grossness and dirt. These are solid and easy to clean. My 9 week old puppy can pick them up and carry them around from the side of her mouth. But the next door 5 year old Labrador is obsessed with them. But then again he is obsessed with balls in general. I just like that these seem to hold less gunk than the others we give him to play with frequently. And they seem to have help up to his chewing just fine. They are reasonably priced for a set of 3 and the colors are nice and visible in the grass which is important. I would be careful to pick them up before mowing the lawn because these are solid and somewhat heavy and I could definitely see a mower just slinging them through a window or off your siding. Overall a nice set of balls that are easy for a human to throw and fit the hand comfortably. They are easy to clean and they are apparently appreciated by the local retrieval expert next door.

Finally, a Ball Our Aggressive Chewer Loves and Hasn’t Destroyed Instantly!
Size: 3 PCS
We’ve gone through more dog toys than I care to admit, because our dog treats them like a personal demolition project! Since she’s a very aggressive chewer, I usually don’t expect toys to last long, so these balls were a really pleasant surprise. They were an instant hit for fetch, chase, and chew time. I love that they have a nice bounce that keeps playtime fun and unpredictable, and the bright colors make them easy to spot in the yard instead of disappearing into the grass. Best of all, they’ve held up far better than many other dog toys we’ve tried. Normally I’m cleaning up shredded toy remains within minutes, but these have proven to be much tougher. Of course, no toy is truly indestructible with a determined chewer, but these have definitely impressed me and earned their place in our toy rotation. If you have a dog that loves interactive play and tends to destroy toys at record speed, these are absolutely worth trying. Easy 5 stars from our house!

Fun and durable toy for dogs of all sizes
Size: 3 PCS
We have three dogs and one of their favorite kinds of toys is balls. These are the perfect size that all three of the dogs can play with them. We have size ranges from pug to Golden Retriever. Even the pug can carry one around. Mostly she just chases them across the floor. They are durable plastic that the dogs can chew on and so far have not punctured. They also haven't started to flake or splinter like some plastic will when it gets older. I like the bright colors because that makes it easier to find in the grass. They aren't extremely hard so if someone inadvertently gets hit with one it isn't terribly painful. They are a good weight to be able to throw repeatedly without getting a tired arm and yet they aren't lightweight so much that they don't go where you aim. When they get too dirty I just pop them in the dishwasher. I appreciate the value of getting three balls in one package.
