This early plan of Tasmania's second major city, Launceston, shows part of the city's current central business district, with Brisbane Street running through the map from end to end, continuing beyond the city as 'Patterson's Plains Road' (now Elphin Road). Settled in 1806, Launceston was the first Australian city to have underground sewers, and the first to be lit by hydroelectricity. By 1861, Launceston's population had grown to more than 10,000 people. Construction of the current Town Hall at 18-28 St John Street started in 1864 (just to the right of Market Square).
