The Gibson J-45 was first introduced in 1942 after years of both mild and drastic changes to the design of Gibson round shoulder dreadnoughts. Since then, it has become the perhaps the most iconic flattop acoustic guitar in the world and certainly Gibson’s top selling acoustic guitar model ever. “The Workhorse” as the J-45 has been lovingly coined, is based on a Sitka Spruce top, Mahogany back and sides pairing. Mahogany’s balance across the EQ range is coveted by guitarists looking for guitars without a mid-scoop. As with all Gibson acoustics, E to E balance is key and the J-45 50s Faded does not fall short.

The neck profile is a round, substantial 50s profile that takes up the space in your hand without being overwhelming. With a 1.725” nut width, a 12” fingerboard radius, and Gibson’s traditional 24.75” scale, this guitar is as comfortable a play at minute-one as it is at hour-one.

The faded nitrocellulose lacquer finish gives the guitar a worn in, aged look without any relic or check to the finish. Nitro allows the guitar to breath, and ages with the instrument, slowly off-gassing until it one day only leaves behind the thinnest layer of finish and pigment. The Faded Sunburst is a subtle yellow to amber look, allowing the wood grain to show through and contributing to the vintage look. The large pickguard also helps tell the story.

Electronics are provided by LR Baggs. The VTC system is barely noticeable visually, with the volume and tone controls hidden in the soundhole, but sonically it replicates your acoustic guitars tone extremely well with a woody, dynamic recreation.

The J-45 50s Faded has just the right amount of working-class adornment via multi-ply top binding, single ply back binding, MOP dot inlays, and a gold Gibson script logo on the peghead.
