BRIDGES PUNTS AND CROSSINGS

Compiled by Judy Ormond

Across Moira Shire Waterways and beyond. 1870s to 2024.

A very insightful read for today’s fast modern world, where we take our bridges for granted, this book captures the challenges people would have faced with communication and commuting goods. A colourful read featuring over 50 years of fascinating bridges, punts and crossings.

FOREWORD

When Judy asked me to write a foreword for this book, I asked to have a copy to read prior to my putting pen to paper.  Duly an incomplete copy arrived and I was stunned at the amount of work already done.  I ended up proof reading her work as I followed Judy’s train of thought in compiling this work.

In today’s fast modern world, we take our bridges for granted but it would be mind enhancing if our residents also visitors just stopped for a moment to imagine what our country here, served by the Goulburn River, Murray River, Broken Creek, their tributaries and anabranches, would be like without the benefit of bridges.  What now takes a fleeting second to pass over a waterway could take many many hours of painstaking labour to get animals and horse-drawn vehicles across the chasm particularly facing the dangers involved in traversing the Goulburn and Murray Rivers with their steep sides and fast flowing water.

Initially punts were brought into operation at strategic crossing places, punt men employed to operate the conveyance, sometimes with a toll to be paid.

Where punts were installed on the major crossings, they attracted the hotel cum store keeper investor who in turn attracted the stock agents and staff with their sheep and cattle sales. The hotel proprietor ran horse races and sporting events at such times as Easter, Xmas and New Years Day which would boost his income.  It was not long before the accumulating inhabitants formed the nucleus of a community and were agitating for a more substantial crossing in the form of a bridge. McCoy’s Bridge, Stewart’s Bridge, Barmah East Bridge and Nathalia town bridge are such examples although today you would not recognize McCoy’s, Barmah East and Stewart’s Bridges as being the centre of communities.

In compiling this work Judy has captured the frustrations of the various shires’ councillors and residents as they faced the daunting task of getting produce to market, purchasing supplies and general communication with towns within those shires. Bridges had to be prioritised according to traffic use and cost.

Bridge building has its own specialized language, particularly the old wooden variety, so for the readers’ benefit a glossary of terms has been included in the publication.

Judy is to be congratulated for her zest over the years in photographing old disused bridges, punts and crossings, the progress of new constructions and in some cases reconstructions of bridges, capturing history for posterity.  The format of the book, that is, in alphabetical order, makes it readily searchable for a particular crossing; a valuable encyclopaedia for local crossings.  It is an epic work that does not have to be read all at once but can be picked up and put down at leisure.  It is a very interesting, colourful publication and a good read.

A Solution to Lapbook Problems
Style: Swivel Base, Color: Silver
This is the best product I have encountered in all my days of using a laptop. I use it with a wireless keyboard, and so the screen is up in my face where I can see it well, and the keyboard in down below where I can type easily without tiring my wrists. I am delighted with it all. The stand swivels, an advantage I was not expecting to care about, and find that I do. The swivel allows me to adjust to the incoming light for better vision. That might not make sense to users of lamps, but I have a skylight and so am accommodating to the sun all day long. The swivel changes everything. Another plus is how sturdy the stand is. I have no fears of it turning over or dumping the laptop into my lap. It is clearly there to stay, and yet if I need to move it, that is easily accomplished. I tuck the entire thing behind closed doors most of the time when it is not in use, and that leaves my work space neat and tidy. There is one final advantage. I am a coffee drinker, and I have always been worried about knocking my cup over into my computer. With the stand, my computer sits above the desk top where I put my coffee, and the keyboard is on s shell below and out of the way. I still prefer to drink rather than knock over my coffee, but, hey, why not have a measure of safety also. I give this product a 10 star review if there is such a thing. It has been a real game changer for me, and now I am not regretting not purchasing a desktop machine. My laptop is absolutely perfect with this stand, and has the advantage that it goes with me when I travel. Bettie Banks

Great Stand for retina Macbook Pro 15" but one thing you have to be careful about! NEW USERS/BUYERS BEWARE!
Style: Swivel Base, Color: Silver
Great stand as other reviewers have noted. The laptop runs cooler, the ergonomics for working are much better.... I just wish ONE thing for this stand. I wish the latch that holds the computer at the bottom trackpad area (meaning the two protruding feet on the stand that are holding your laptop in place right by the trackpad) had a bit more height to it. I have noticed my laptop is almost flush with the feet of the stand, which looks nice design-wise, but makes it a bit less-than-secure. A few times, I thought I put my laptop on the stand securely, but found that a small bump would almost make the laptop slide down off that latch, meaning I did not put my laptop securely onto the stand and into the latch after all. Thank goodness I saved my Mac right before the it fell and got any damage those few times. I have one of the latest generations of the retina Macbook Pro 15", which means my computer is thus relatively thin (meaning that the height of the laptop when fully closed, from the bottom of the case to the top of the case, is really short). So if I am having trouble with it, I bet older generations of Macbook Pros that are a bit thicker, or any other laptops that are thicker, might have the same issues I have. Computers that are thin like the Macbook Air probably do not have much issue. But now that I am aware of the issue, I double-check to make sure that the latch is securely holding the laptop when placing it on the stand, so it is not that big of a problem to deal with--just NEW USERS/BUYERS PLEASE BEWARE SO YOU MAKE SURE YOUR LAPTOP DOESN'T SLIDE OFF!

Looks improved!
Style: Swivel Base, Color: Silver, Style: Swivel Base, Color: Silver
Bought this model originally in 2016 and it has held up quite well. Decided to get a newer one since some of the product images appeared to indicate some changes had been made. - the center opening with the logo is larger, better for airflow. - the circle pads on the top are also larger. - the front lip has been simplified using less materials, good choice. - the bottom bearings are noticeably smoother and quieter. Great attention to detail I think. I prefer the 360 spinning version after trying the standard one. The ability to rotate the stand is just so convenient. This is my favorite aluminum stand on here and now it’s even better! See photos and video for comparison. Old model on left.

Functional, durable, and color-matching stand for MacBook Pro
Style: Swivel Base, Color: Space Gray
I recently purchased this stand for my MacBook Pro and I am extremely pleased with my purchase. The design of the stand is a perfect match for my MacBook Pro, it looks great and it fits perfectly. The stand is made of durable materials and it feels very sturdy and stable, perfect for keeping on your desk. One of the features that I appreciate the most is that it allows me to rotate my MacBook Pro 360 degrees, which is extremely convenient when I am in a meeting and need to show something on my screen to someone else. The stand also has a non-slip rubber base which provides a stable and secure grip on any surface. Additionally, the color space gray is exactly the same as the MacBook Pro, which makes it seamlessly integrate with the overall design. Even though it is not lightweight to carry around, it is designed to be kept on your desk, which makes it perfect for a workstation. In summary, I highly recommend this stand for MacBook Pro to anyone looking for a functional and durable stand that allows to rotate the screen, perfect to keep on your workstation and with a color that integrates seamlessly with the MacBook Pro.

Loved it so much I bought a second one!
Style: Swivel Base, Color: Space Gray
I have two of these bad boys: one at the office and one at home, and I've used them for a couple of years now. I love them. I pair it with a separate Bluetooth keyboard on the desk, and I can't imagine doing computer work without it anymore. Being able to elevate the screen transforms my laptop into a small PC, and I love being able to swivel it around to show a coworker what I'm working on or to just glance at the screen real quick if I'm up walking around. I've never had any stability issues with these. So long as you put it on a level surface, I think you'll be fine. The mStand360 is badass.
