Course Overview: EMR + BC Scope of Practice Update

This course is ideal for individuals who not only want to become certified as Emergency Medical Responders (EMR) but also require the BC EMALB Scope of Practice Schedule 1 & 2 components — which are mandatory for licensing with BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) or Fire Services in British Columbia.

It includes:

• Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) + BC EMALB Scope of Practice

  (For students who may be comparing or upgrading)

• Emergency Medical Responder Course : 120 hours (Aimed toward PCP students)

• Emergency Medical Responder Course accelerated: 80 hours (aimed towards first fighters)

• EMR Workbook - 30 hours self paced(must be completed and submitted prior to course start date)

• Scope of Practice Schedules 1 & 2: 

  • • 8 hours self-directed online component

    • 16 hours in-person teaching time

    • Total: 96 hours of classroom instruction (not including breaks)

    • Additional hours 24 hours provided to PCP applicants for 120 requirements

This combined course ensures you meet national standards outlined by the Paramedic Association of Canada and satisfy the provincial licensing requirements in BC.

Completion Requirements:

To earn your EMR certification and qualify for EMALB licensing:

• Complete 100% of the course (online + in-class)

• Demonstrate all required practical skills

• Score 75% or higher on the written exam

• Successfully pass two evaluated scenarios (1 trauma, 1 medical)

Certification Received:

• 3-year Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification

• BC EMALB Scope of Practice Schedule 1 & 2 completion

• Digital certificate issued upon successful completion

• Recertification: 40 hours required every 3 years to maintain certification

Licensing in British Columbia:

Step 1: Request an evaluation from the Emergency Medical Assistants Licensing Board (EMALB) after course completion.
Step 2: Complete the required EMALB written and practical exams within 12 months of certification.
Step 3: Submit your application to EMALB for official Emergency Medical Assistant (EMA) licensure.
