Convicts and Jane Austen’s Doctor.

COUNTY OF SOUTHAMPTON. Calendar of the Prisoners in the County Gaol, at Winchester, tried at the Easter Sessions, holden At the Castle of Winchester, on Tuesday, April 12, 1825. Winchester: James Robbins, [1825].

Small-folio (c. 300 x 200 mm), pp. 9, printed on vellum; a little spotted in places, marginal traces of humidity; loose and disbound.

Extremely rare, with only one further copy recorded, at Hampshire Archives. This prison record, actually not a calendar at all, lists 41 named convicts with their age, crime and sentence on pages two to four, followed by death sentences (40 in all), offences under the revenue law, and convictions for various crimes, such as ‘unlawfully cutting Timber without the consent of its Owner’. The final four pages are taken up by name, age, crime and sentence of 136 prisoners in the County Bridewell. Sarah Russen, aged 36, e.g. had been imprisoned for a year for ‘being a lewd woman’; ‘being a rogue and vagabond’ could result in three months. Other severely punishable crimes were killing rabbits (6 months), ‘having part of a deer in his possession’ (12 months) or ‘leaving his family’ (three months and hard labour). Among the convicts sentenced for transportation are the 26-year old James Fogley for stealing ‘one fowling piece’ or Charles Holloway, aged 23, for stealing a hand-saw.

The publication ends with the confirmation by the surgeon Giles King Lyford (1764-1837), that there is ‘No Putrid or Infectious in the Great Gaol, or House of Correction’. He was Surgeon-in-Ordinary at the County Hospital in Winchester and attended on Jane Austen during her final illness. Jane in fact moved to Winchester in 1817 shortly before her death so that she should be near her doctor. His uncle John Lyford (1740-1829) had been the Austens’ family doctor and the Lyfords had been among the Austens’ neighbourly friends.

Such prison records, especially produced for a provincial prison are usually manuscripts, as not many copies were needed. Why the County of Southampton needed it in print and moreover, on vellum, remains a mystery. – All traces on the internet of another copy being or having been in the book trade have been identified as relating to this particular copy offered here.

So good - I’m buying MORE.
Number of Items: 3, Color: White (3-pairs), Size: Medium
I’m gonna give you more detail than you need about why I’m buying these socks again. I’ve been the mom of girl athletes. I’ve been a model and a fashion director. I’ve worn every brand of shoe on the planet and never found a shoe that did NOT find a vulnerable spot on my foot to rub raw. Even my beloved white Jack Purcell sneakers. With that said - I don’t like socks. I’ve bought a TON of them in 35+ years.....all major brands. They shift. They lose their shape. They get holes in them and wear out too fast. Not these. I retired this year, and knowing I’d be in sneakers a lot, traveling, sightseeing ...... I bought these 6 months ago and have worn them constantly. I’ve traveled with them. I’ve washed them in hot water and bleach. The socks are like brand new. They are exactly the right cut so as not to be seen in a basic sneaker. The little silicone patch on the heel stays put. Not once have I had to dig down into my shoe and pull the sock back up. The socks have stayed soft and EXACTLY the same as the day they were new. Like I said - I am back to buy them again. Great quality!

Stay put!
Number of Items: 3, Color: White/Neutral (3-pairs), Size: Medium
Nice and thin, soft, and stay put. I wear an 8 shoe and don’t like a thick sock taking up room. These socks are a bit tight on big toe. Wish they came in large.

The best
Number of Items: 3, Color: White/Neutral (3-pairs), Size: Medium
The best no show socks I have found. Stay in place very well and hold up wash after wash. I have tossed all the other brands I’ve bought over the years and stocked up on these as I was tired of digging through the drawer hoping to find a clean pair.

Love these.
Number of Items: 3, Color: White (3-pairs), Size: Medium
I have them in black and white. I use them everyday in all shoes. These are very versatile and a great quality material. They take a looong time to wear and they stay in place. Very washable and good material. They are not too thick and they do not shrink. I do air dry mine. They do not hold smells even in the summer heat.
