Middlegame Mischief
What should you do when the opening is over but there are still plenty of pieces on the board?
The middlegame is the most complex stage of the game, where players can rely neither on memorized lines nor on endgame fundamentals. During this phase, many players report feeling directionless and unsure how to make progress. But fear not! This camp will give you a toolkit of middlegame ideas to help you find a way forward.
We will cover a variety of topics including hunting your opponent’s king, making your pieces happy, cruising down the open files of the chess board, and stopping your opponent’s mischief!
Students will see many examples from master games so they can learn how the great players tackle these concepts.
This camp is suitable for players of all levels. Beginners will focus on some core middlegame ideas while also learning basic chess tactics. Advanced players will spend more time analyzing master games, studying the precise tactical execution of mischievous plans.
By the end of the camp you will be a master of middlegame mischief, a menace to anyone you face!
We'll also have a free bonus lesson for campers on Thursday, August 20th at 4:30pm ET with Grandmaster Ruben Felgaer!
Typical schedule for a day:
- 10:30-10:40 Introductions, chat, get to know each other
- 10:40-11:10 Lesson
- 11:10-11:45 Practice games and possibly student game analysis
- 11:45-12:00 Break
- 12:00-12:25 Lesson
- 12:25-1:00 Practice games
