DEIGHTON, Len. The Ipcress File; Horse Under Water; Funeral in Berlin; Billion Dollar Brain; An Expensive Place to Die. London: Hodder & Stoughton and Jonathan Cape. 1963-1967.

8vo. Five volumes, all first printings except The Ipcress File, which is a third impression. Original cloth lettered in gilt to spines, in the Raymond Hawkey designed dustwrappers; pp. 224; 255, [1]; 320; [8], 312; 254, [2]; moderate wear to cloth, text block edges with a few light marks and some toning but no spotting, wrappers with the usual wear, toning, creasing and laminate peeling to the first four volumes (see notes below), An Expensive Place to Die a little faded to wrapper spine; Horse Under Water and An Expensive Place to Die both signed by the author in black ink to upper edge of title pages; Horse Under Water is the variant with black endpapers; An Expensive Place to Die complete with the “Top Secret In Transit Docket” loosely laid in; a very good set.

A complete run of Deighton’s “Harry Palmer” quintet, two volumes signed by the author; one of the great works of post-war espionage fiction.

“At the time I wrote The Ipcress File,” Len Deighton wrote in the introduction for a recent paperback edition, “I’d never read any of the James Bond books, and John le Carré’s The Spy Who Came in From the Cold was still something to come in the distant future.” The five novels offered together here, however, – he referred to An Expensive Place to Die as “the fifth and last in [the] sequence” – have since comfortably taken their place beside those other great works of postwar espionage fiction.

Deighton’s unnamed protagonist (later named Harry Palmer in the film adaptations, where he was memorably played by Michael Caine) is from a different world than either Bond or Smiley, and the interplay between characters in The Ipcress File, Deighton records, was “inspired by a brief period […] spent working in a London advertising agency. I was the 'technician' surrounded by clever witty young men who'd been at Eton together.” He transplanted this, with added friction, into the context of an intelligence agency office.

These original editions, in the wonderful Raymond Hawkey-designed wrappers, have always been collectible, and notably hard to find in decent condition (the publishers reportedly balked at the predominantly white cast of the wrappers, correctly predicting their consequent discolouration and soiling). This better than average set, all first printings with the exception of Ipcress (a third impression), includes two volumes signed (without dedication) by Deighton.

Great lightweight fabric, good design
Color: Grey Green, Size: Small, Color: Grey Green, Size: Small
This hoodie is a great athletic top. The size small fits my husband well, although it's a little loose in the arms. So if you have a leaner figure, you may find it a bit baggy. But the fabric is fantastic, a high-quality performance fabric that seems breathable and the UV protection is a great bonus. The sleeves are long enough to make good use of the thumb holes in cooler weather, and the color is a nice neutral, gray-green. For reference, the size small has a chest of about 42" (measured just under the sleeves) and a center back length of approx. 25".

Great Quality and Look
Color: Grey Green, Size: Medium
21st century materials are here to save us! :) M Maelreg does a great job utilizing those materials to the best of their ability. I've really become a fan of just about anything that they make, and this shirt is no exception. It's made from the very popular 88/12 Poly/spandex blend that has become ubiquitous in the fitness/active industry because of its amazing tensile characteristics- wicking, quick dry, UPF, and extra comfy against the skin. You get all of that here and a no-frills, really beautiful color to go along with a fit that is exactly true to size. I took the more form-fitting version for my 5'10" 175 lb. frame (I've found both L and M work from these guys, M for a more tailored look) and it's exactly right- enough room to move around comfortably and breathe, not so tight that it's hugging my belly. It's super lightweight and really easy to launder (I hang dry mine to prevent pilling and wrinkles), cold/low and a medium/low heat iron to rid those stubborn factory wrinkles and you shouldn't ever need to iron it again. Another great offering from the folks at Maelreg.

Just like the big brands!
Color: Light Dark Blue Grid, Size: 3X-Large
This hoodie is very good quality. I would say it compares to many of the Columbia or Northface type. The only problem that I encountered was that the sleeves are very long, but that might be a me problem because I am pretty short. The hoodie is very lightweight so it can even be worn on semi warm days and really is mostly used as a form of sunblock. I feel like the sizing is very true to size and if anything there’s a little extra room. The price is just right since it’s much less expensive than the big brands and it holds up after being washed several times. It’s very comfortable and breathes very nicely as well.
