'A Best-Seller Overnight'

BRASSEY, Anna ['Annie'], Lady BRASSEY. A Voyage in the 'Sunbeam' our Home on the Ocean for Eleven Months. London: Longmans, Green, and Co. 1880.

8vo. Original brown pictorial cloth, all edges gilt; pp. xix, 492; wood-engraved frontispiece, title-vignette, illustrations in the text by G. Pearson after A.Y. Bingham, large folding colour-printed lithographic map by Edward Weller; lower panel a little discoloured, apart from light spotting to endpapers (offsetting to adjacent pages) and map (as usual), a very good copy with contemporary ownership inscription to half-title.

New edition. Encouraged by the success of her travel books The Flight of the "Meteor" ([s.l.: 1866) and A Cruise in "Eothen" (London: 1873), Baroness Brassey (1839-1887) and her husband Thomas, Baron Brassey (1836-1918), decided to undertake a circumnavigation in the Sunbeam, their 531-ton, three-masted, topsail schooner, with a 350-horsepower steam engine, which had been launched in 1874. The Sunbeam embarked on 1 July 1876 with a complement of forty-four comprising the Brasseys and their children, a small party of friends, a professional crew, and a complete domestic staff. Their voyage took them 'across the south Atlantic, through the Strait of Magellan into the Pacific Ocean, continuing by way of Tahiti, Hawaii, and Japan to Penang and thence to Ceylon, Aden, and the Red Sea. While the Sunbeam passed through the Suez Canal, Annie Brassey and the children went overland to Cairo to visit the pyramids, rejoining the party at Alexandria. Their arrival at Hastings on 27 May 1877 completed the eleven-month voyage. It had been a complete success, uneventful except for a dangerous flooding of the decks in a high sea off Ushant and their rescue of the crew of a ship on fire near Rio. The monotony of the days at sea was varied by excursions ashore, planned and led by Annie Brassey to the colourful street markets of Rio, Valparaíso, and Singapore, and to scenes of natural beauty in Tahiti, Ceylon, and Hawaii with its thrilling volcanoes. The voyage was to make Annie Brassey a celebrity not because she had been round the world in a luxury yacht, but because she struck exactly the right note in her book about the adventure, using the entries in her journal to describe rambles ashore and daily life afloat: this was lively enough with five children under fourteen, a dog, three birds, and a kitten aboard. A Voyage in the "Sunbeam" (1878) was a solid work of 508 pages with maps and wood-engravings. It was a best-seller overnight, reached its nineteenth edition in 1896, and was translated into French, German, Italian, Swedish, and Hungarian […] The cruises of the Sunbeam may have resembled family picnics rather than voyages of discovery, but Annie Brassey, who inspired and organized them, is not to be denied the status of a true traveller. A poor sailor, never really well at sea, she dared all it could do to her, in order that she might visit the farthest corners of the earth. As her husband wrote, "the voyage would not have been undertaken and assuredly it would never have been completed without the impulse derived from her perseverance and determination"' (ODNB). The Preface to the New Edition states that 'the letterpress has only been slightly curtailed and a copious selection has been made from the original series of illustrations' (p. vii), and the Appendix on pp. [481]-492 contains a summary of the entire voyage, compiled from the log-book.

Made with Arc-Chill fabric, these pillowcases promise to offer a cooling effect, protect hair and skin, and add a touch of luxury with their soft and silky texture. The pillowcases come in a standard gray color, suitable for standard and queen-size pillows. #### Material and Design **Rating: ★★★★★** The Avolare Cooling Pillow Cases are crafted from Arc-Chill fabric, known for its high Q-max value (>0.5), indicating excellent cooling properties. The material feels incredibly soft and silky to the touch, providing a luxurious feel that enhances sleep quality. The gray color is neutral and versatile, fitting seamlessly with various bedding styles. The design includes a hidden zipper, ensuring that the pillowcase stays securely on the pillow while maintaining a smooth and sleek appearance. The zipper is discreet and doesn’t interfere with comfort, which is a thoughtful addition to the overall design. #### Cooling Effect **Rating: ★★★★★** One of the standout features of these pillowcases is their cooling effect. The Arc-Chill fabric effectively wicks away heat and moisture, making them ideal for hot sleepers or those living in warmer climates. Users have reported a noticeable difference in temperature, which contributes to a more restful and comfortable night’s sleep. This cooling property is particularly beneficial during the summer months or for individuals who tend to overheat while sleeping. #### Hair and Skin Benefits **Rating: ★★★★☆** In addition to their cooling properties, the Avolare pillowcases are also beneficial for hair and skin. The smooth and silky texture reduces friction, helping to prevent hair breakage and skin irritation. This can be particularly advantageous for individuals with sensitive skin or those prone to hair damage. While the pillowcases are not a cure-all for skin and hair issues, they do contribute positively by creating a gentler surface. #### Durability and Care **Rating: ★★★★☆** The Avolare Cooling Pillow Cases are easy to care for, maintaining their cooling properties and softness even after multiple washes. They are machine washable, which adds to their convenience. However, it is recommended to follow the care instructions carefully to ensure the longevity of the cooling effect and fabric quality. #### Versatility **Rating: ★★★★☆** These pillowcases are designed to fit both standard and queen-size pillows, adding to their versatility. They are perfect for use in any bedroom setting, from master bedrooms to guest rooms, and can be paired with various pillow types and fillings. #### Pros and Cons **Pros:** - Excellent cooling properties ideal for hot sleepers. - Soft and silky texture is gentle on hair and skin. - Hidden zipper design for a secure fit. - Machine washable and easy to care for. - Versatile fit for standard and queen-size pillows. **Cons:** - Cooling effect may diminish slightly with frequent washing. - Limited color options (only available in gray). #### Final Verdict **Overall Rating: ★★★★☆** The Avolare 2 Pack Cooling Pillow Cases are an excellent choice for anyone looking to enhance their sleeping experience, particularly hot sleepers. The cooling properties of the Arc-Chill fabric, combined with the soft and silky texture, provide a comfortable and luxurious feel. The hidden zipper design adds practicality without sacrificing aesthetics. While there are minor drawbacks, such as potential diminishing of the cooling effect with frequent washing and limited color options, the overall benefits make these pillowcases a worthwhile investment. If you’re seeking to improve your sleep quality and enjoy a cooler, more comfortable night’s rest, the Avolare Cooling Pillow Cases are definitely worth considering.

Cool as the other side of the pillow
Color: Gray, Size: Queen (U.S. Standard), Set name: Stretchy and Soft
Good quality and keeps cool on side of pillow. Have to flip pillow for constant cooling is the ok only down side. Love the material as it is very soft and silky feel to it. Doesn't wrinkle over pillow and had some good color options. Easy to clean. Fair price for a good product

Love!
Color: Blue, Size: Queen (U.S. Standard), Set name: Stretchy and Soft
Awesome cases! They really are cool to the touch. I didn’t sleep hot at all. I have a “cut-out” memory foam pillow, and this stretched around it perfectly. It is flexible enough that it doesn’t impede with the cut out. And while the material is “silky,” it doesn’t slide around the pillow while sleeping on it. The zipper feature is perfect. I washed and dried per the tag instructions and they washed very well. Super happy.

AMAZING - LOVE THESE!
Color: Blue, Size: Queen (U.S. Standard), Set name: Stretchy and Soft
I've been using these pillow cases for more than 6 months and LOVE them. They are well made, no wrinkling, fraying or wearing out, even with a weekly washing. I love the zippers on them, my pillows fits perfectly in the case and don't constantly escape from the case overnight. They definitely perform as described: they keep me cool at night and don't smell and actually don't make a mess of my hair. I bought an extra one and put it on a pillow I keep close to my body which helps me from overheating during the night. They are a great value for the price, I wish I could get top sheets in the same style as these and I'd be in heaven!

Cool Pillowcases
Color: Gray, Size: Queen (U.S. Standard), Set name: Stretchy and Soft
These pillow cases are silky soft and cool to the touch. They don’t stay as cool as I would like, however, so I find myself moving around on the pillow to find a cool spot or flipping the pillow over. I have washed them several times and the coolness seems to be diminishing. Still, it’s better than a regular cotton pillow case. The zipper is needed and helps keep the material on the pillow.
