Discover 'The Left Case Against the EU,' a thought-provoking analysis by economist Costas Lapavitsas that challenges the prevalent views on the European Union. Ideal for those questioning the implications of EU policies, this essential reading argues that the EU has become a vehicle for neoliberalism, entrenching austerity measures, privatization, and wage suppression, particularly in the wake of the Eurozone crisis. Lapavitsas examines how Germany's dominance has fractured the EU into an unstable core and its disadvantaged peripheries, suggesting that meaningful reform is unattainable within the current framework. Instead, he advocates for a revolutionary approach that emphasizes popular sovereignty and national independence as the cornerstones of a genuinely progressive and socialist Europe. This compelling manifesto is a must-read for anyone on the Left seeking to understand the future of Europe and its institutions. With 160 pages of incisive arguments, this brand new edition (ISBN: 9781509531066, published by John Wiley & Sons in 2018) is essential for students, activists, and scholars alike who are engaged in the debates surrounding the EU. Description:
Many on the Left see the European Union as a fundamentally benign project with the potential to underpin ever greater cooperation and progress. If it has drifted rightward, the answer is to fight for reform from within. In this iconoclastic polemic, economist Costas Lapavitsas demolishes this view. He contends that the EU™s response to the Eurozone crisis represents the ultimate transformation of the union into a neoliberal citadel that institutionally embeds austerity, privatization, and wage cuts. Concurrently, the rise of German hegemony has divided the EU into an unstable core and dependent peripheries. These related developments make the EU impervious to meaningful reform. The solution is therefore a direct challenge to the EU project that stresses popular and national sovereignty as preconditions for true internationalist socialism. Lapavitsas™s powerful manifesto for a left opposition to the EU upends the wishful thinking that often characterizes the debate and will be a challenging read for all on the Left interested in the future of Europe.

Good history of the court despite some bias
Format: Hardcover
This was a very interesting history of the court and a fairly good account of how it had changed as well as in other ways not changed over 2 centuries. In the final part regarding the current court, it is apparent that the author is not even handed regarding his analysis of the current justices and decisions, especially regarding anything involving President Trump. Overall, scholarly and well cited with much good analysis and explanation, at least through 80% or so of the book.

Even handed approach and approachable
Format: Kindle
The accolades provided by the book reviewers are accurate. This is accessible, non-partisan and shows a keen understanding of how our legal system has developed over the history of the US. As a practicing attorney, I found myself exclaiming over and again "wow, I didn't realize that!" throughout the read. I studied many of the cases he discusses in law school. I've read other books about the Supreme Court included Wm. Rhenquist's History of the Supreme Court and The Bretheren. Even though I was a serious student, I was enlightened by the author's telling of the story. Like a good history book, this is well-researched.

A must read at a good cost
Format: Hardcover
A recent release and should be read by everyone in order to understand the history on why we have a Supreme Court, why it is the most powerful in the world, its origins, why our founding fathers believed it was necessary and how it addressed significant events in our country's history; paperbound is the best and a good price for an depth analysis or such an important institution

You don't have to be a lawyer to read this
Format: Hardcover
I typically read my non-fiction books from cover to cover, but not this one. I'm using it as mainly a reference book. I thought the author might exhibit some 'left coast bias' but I was pleasantly surprised.
Highly recommended.
